The 2016 Norisring Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Nuremburg 2016 Race 2, was the eighth round of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Norisring in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, on 26 June 2016.[1] The race would see Nico Müller sweep to his maiden DTM victory, in a race dictated by tyre and pit strategies.[2]
Qualifying had seen Mattias Ekström streak to pole position, although his involvement in a race deciding incident in the Saturday Race meant he had to serve a grid penalty.[3] Tom Blomqvist hence inherited pole position ahead of Paul di Resta, while Müller would start ahead of Ekström.[3]
The start of the race saw Blomqvist sweep across to block di Resta, allowing Müller to entertain hopes of a lunge around the outside of the first hairpin.[2] That was thwarted and so the Swiss racer had to settle for second, as behind Ekström smashed his radiator while lunging at di Resta and was forced to retire.[2]
Ekström would spread debris across the circuit as he made his way to the pits to retire, resulting in a Safety Car being dispatched to clear the circuit.[2] Augusto Farfus would also retire after a collision of his own with the barriers, with the SC remaining out for a few laps.[2]
At the restart Blomqvist would manage to ease clear, leaving Müller to fend off the attentions of di Resta.[2] The Scot soon dropped back as a result of his tyres fading faster than expected, leaving Müller on Blomqvist's tail ahead as he slipped into the sights of Lucas Auer and Maxime Martin.[2]
di Resta and Martin were the first of the leaders to stop, while Auer assumed third place an instantly began running quicker.[2] Blomqvist would stop on the following tour as well as Auer, with the Brit rejoining in the de facto lead, while Auer slipped back behind di Resta and Martin.[2]
Müller, meanwhile, would complete nine more tours before sweeping in for his stop, and a quick turn around by Audi Team Abt ensured that the #51 Audi emerged ahead of the #31 BMW.[2] However, before he could build a lead the race would brought under the SC's control once again, this time the result of António Félix da Costa dumping most of his car on the circuit after a collision with Daniel Juncadella.[2]
The restart passed without issue, and hence allowed Müller to escape to victory ahead of Blomqvist.[2] Martin completed the podium after escaping from di Resta, with the Scot himself having had to fend off the attentions of Auer through to the chequered flag to secure fourth.[2] Marco Wittmann was next up ahead of Bruno Spengler, Edoardo Mortara, Timo Glock and Martin Tomczyk, who finished nose-to-tail behind the squabbling #3 and #22 Mercedes.[2]
Background[]
Edoardo Mortara moved to the top of the Championship with victory, moving onto 69 points for the campaign. Marco Wittmann had retained second, moving two behind the new leader, while Jamie Green had moved into third on 63 points. Former leader Robert Wickens, meanwhile, had slipped to fifth, level on points with Paul di Resta in fourth but behind as the Scot had a race victory.
Audi Team Abt Sportsline were the leaders in the Teams' Championship midway through the Norisring weekend, heading into the Sunday Race with 115 points. BMW Team RMG were their closest challengers in second, while Mercedes Team HWA I led the Mercedes charge from fifth. BMW, meanwhile, would lead the charge in the Manufacturers' Championship, holding a 31 point advantage over Audi.
