The 2016 Spielberg Race 1, otherwise formally known as the DTM Spielberg 2016 Race 1, was the third round of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Styria, Austria on 21 May 2016.[1] The race would see Marco Wittmann claim his first victory of the season, fending off a sustained challenge from BMW stablemate Tom Blomqvist.[2]
Wittmann and Blomqvist would be in a day long fight at the head of the field, with the pair having duelled for pole position in qualifying.[3] The German racer ultimately won that battle in his Red Bull liveried BMW, while Adrien Tambay and Edoardo Mortara shared the second row for Audi.[3]
The start of the race saw Wittmann ease away to secure an early lead, while Blomqvist kept the squabbling Audis of Mortara and Tambay at bay.[2] The latter duo would sort themselves out with Mortara emerging ahead, with the rest of the field thundering in behind them.[2]
Tambay's challenge faded soon after, as Timo Glock and Martin Tomczyk stormed past at Remus to make it four BMWs in the top five.[2] Behind, Paul di Resta elbowed his way up amongst the second batch of BMWs to claim eighth, although António Félix da Costa was putting up a ferocious challenge.[2]
At the head of the field the order would quickly settle, with Wittmann establishing a lead over Blomqvist, while Mortara was harassed by Glock and Tomczyk for third.[2] Behind them, however, the race was far more turbulent, particularly for Tambay as he slipped behind Maxime Martin, di Resta and da Costa.[2]
da Costa subsequently found himself facing the stewards' wrath for his move on the Frenchman, for it had been done under yellow flags at Remus.[2] The source of the yellow flag would be Daniel Juncadella, who had been forced to stop after a collision with stablemate Christian Vietoris that had disabled both cars.[2]
The closing stages would see Blomqvist close back onto the tail of Wittmann to challenge for the lead, although the German racer placed his car perfectly to deny the Anglo-Swede a lunge.[2] That fight allowed Mortara to catch back up and challenge for second, having escaped from Glock and Tomczyk midway through the race.[2]
With that the race was over, with Wittmann keeping Blomqvist at bay to secure the victory, his first of the season.[2] Behind, Mortara kept the Brit in his sights en-route to third, while Glock and Tomczyk scrapped for fourth to the chequered flag.[2] Martin was next up ahead of di Resta and Tambay, while Augusto Farfus and Nico Müller completed the top ten.[2]
Background[]
Paul di Resta's imperious display in the second race of the weekend meant the Scot left Hockenheim in the lead of the Championship, nine points ahead of Robert Wickens. The Canadian had two strong performances to claim 28 points, leaving him three clear of race one winner Edoardo Mortara. Nico Müller was also among the early front runners in fourth, and the only other man with more than 20 points, while Maxime Martin completed the top five. Of the 24 drivers entered in the 2016 Championship 16 had scored in Hockenheim.
Team HWA had both of their teams leading the Teams' Championship, the second entry led by di Resta leading the way courtesy of the Scot's 37 points from the weekend. Behind the two HWA outfits was the Abt Sportsline team, with Mortara leading their challenge, while BMW Team RBM led the BMW challenge from fourth. As for the Brands' Championship, it was Mercedes who led the way with 87 points, 22 clear of BMW, while Audi would leave Hockenheim with 50.
