The DTM Spielberg 2016 Race 2, otherwise known as the 2016 Spielberg Race 2, was the fourth race of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, held at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Styria, Austria on 22 May 2016.[1] The race would see Timo Glock secure an imperious victory, after battling up the field in the early laps of the race.[2]
Qualifying had been a very tight affair, as Jamie Green laid claim to pole position by just 0.002s from António Félix da Costa in a race long battle.[3] Glock himself qualified in third ahead of Maxime Martin, while the best of the Mercedes drivers was Robert Wickens, down in fifteenth.[3]
The start of the race saw Green ease across to block the advances of da Costa, and hence emerged from the first corner with the lead.[2] Behind, Glock eased into third as Edoardo Mortara blasted past Martin, while Wickens remained the lead Mercedes but remained outside of the top ten.[2]
The run to Remus would then see Glock ease past da Costa, before pulling a repeat move on Green at the start of the following tour with the aid of DRS.[2] Green moved to launch a counter attack on the following lap, only for the Safety Car to be scrambled at the start of lap three.[2]
The cause was an accident for Nico Müller, who had been pushed off the circuit by Wickens at the Würth Kurve, reaching barriers as yet untouched by a DTM car.[2] One the Swiss racer had been dragged away the race resumed, with Glock instantly breaking clear of Green, who instead came under fire from da Costa.[2]
Once again Green's defence proved more than adequate, and would ultimately result in da Costa running wide and slipping behind Mortara, Augusto Farfus and Martin.[2] With that, Green was able to stabilise the gap between himself and race leader Glock, with the pair remaining split by two seconds before the pitstops.[2]
Glock stopped first, and would gain a fair undercut against the Brit to extend his advantage.[2] Mattias Ekström duly inherited the lead, and was subsequently given the chance to challenge for victory after a Slow Zone came into play before his stop.[2]
The source would be another collision among the leaders, this time the result of Mortara trying too hard to get back past da Costa after the Portuguese racer had eased past him.[2] Their contact at Rauch left Mortara beached in the gravel, while da Costa scrambled back onto the circuit but had to pit.[2]
Ekström rejoined from his stop in third, and was allowed to pass Green without issue once it became clear that the Brit was not matching Glock's pace.[2] However, with six minutes to go the Swede faced a significant deficit of five seconds to the German, and would not lap fast enough to catch the #16 BMW.[2]
With that the race was run, with Glock cruising to the line to secure victory, while Ekström claimed second ahead of Green.[2] Farfus was next up ahead of Martin, Tom Blomqvist and Marco Wittmann, while Mike Rockenfeller and Bruno Spengler scrapped for eighth.[2] Timo Scheider would then complete the top ten, fending off Gary Paffett to the line meaning that none of the Mercedes drivers scored points.[2]
Background[]
Paul di Resta had retained the lead in the Championship after the third round of the season, heading into the Sunday race with a three point lead. Edoardo Mortara was his closest challenger in second, while Saturday race winner Marco Wittmann had climbed up into third. Next up was Robert Wickens after his meagre haul of points, while Maxime Martin had retained fifth.
In the Teams' Championship BMW Team RBM had emerged at the head of the field, ten points ahead of former leaders Mercedes Team HWA II. Third was occupied by Audi Team Abt Sportsline, while BMW Team RMG and Mercedes Team HWA I completed the top five. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, BMW had emerged ahead of Mercedes, while Audi were a lonely third.

Milestones[]
- Third win for Timo Glock.
Standings[]
It would be Paul di Resta who left Austria with the lead in the DTM Championship, a surprise given the fact that he had only scored minor points across the entire weekend. Edoardo Mortara was up into second as previous occupier Robert Wickens tumbled down to eighth. Timo Glock was the biggest climber of the weekend, leaping up fourteen places to claim third, with Maxime Martin, Marco Wittmann, Tom Blomqvist and Augusto Farfus all getting ahead of Canadian Wickens.
BMW Team RMG shot to the top of the Teams' Championship after their drivers claimed top honours in both races, a feat that also propelled BMW to the top of the Brands Standings. BMW Team RBM were up in second ahead of Audi Team Abt Sportsline, the first Audi backed team, as they held on to third. It had been a dismal weekend for Mercedes, however, as they slipped over 100 points back in the Brands Championship, their only points across the weekend having been scored by early title pretender di Resta.
