The 2016 Zandvoort Race 1, otherwise known as the DTM Zandvoort 2016 Race 1, was the ninth round of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in Zandvoort, North Holland, Netherlands, on 16 July 2016.[1] The race would see Robert Wickens claim pole, fastest lap and victory to become the eighth different winner of the season to move into title contention.[2]
Qualifying had seen Wickens storm to pole position, beating Marco Wittmann with a late run to the top of the timesheets.[3] Next up was Christian Vietoris and Gary Paffett, while Jamie Green and Edoardo Mortara shared the third row at the head of the Audi charge.[3]
The start of the race would see formation flying at the head of the field, as Wickens eased clear of Wittmann, while Vietoris led Paffett and Green into Tarzan.[2] Behind, however, there would be chaos as Adrien Tambay failed to get away at the same rate as everyone else, triggering a first lap Safety Car.[2]
Maximilian Götz was the main victim, for having jinked around the crawling Audi the German racer would be pushed back into the #27 car after being barged by Martin Tomczyk.[2] The collision destroyed both Götz's Mercedes and Tambay's Audi, leaving debris littered across the start/finish straight, while Tomczyk carried on with damage to the side of his BMW.[2]
Tomczyk was penalised for his part in the incident, serving his penalty when the race resumed at the start of lap four.[2] Out front, meanwhile, Wickens would escape from Wittmann to secure the lead, while Vietoris again kept Paffett at bay to hold third.[2]
The race would be interrupted by another incident, as Augusto Farfus got beached at turn eight and hence caused a Slow Zone.[2] Mortara and Nico Müller were subsequently penalised for speeding in the Zone, dumping them to the back of the field with Tomczyk.[2]
Wickens, meanwhile, would continue to build his lead ahead of Wittmann, while Vietoris managed to match their pace.[2] Behind, Paffett dropped back and had to fend off the attnetions of Green, while António Félix da Costa battled his way up into sixth ahead of Mattias Ekström.[2]
With that the race was run, with Wickens setting fastest lap en-route to a dominant victory having led every lap of the race to score his first win since 2015.[2] Behind, Vietoris' pace collapsed badly in the closing stages and had to rally back from a move from Paffett to secure third, with Paffett himself having to settle for fourth.[2] Green was next up ahead of da Costa, while Ekström, Daniel Juncadella, Esteban Ocon and Maxime Martin.[2]
Background[]
Despite failing to win in the Norisring it would be Marco Wittmann who topped the DTM Championship table at the end of the Nuremberg weekend, holding a two point advantage over Edoardo Mortara. Paul di Resta was back in the top three, three points further back, while Jamie Green remained in fourth after a strong race one performance. Maxime Martin was into fifth, ahead of former Championship leader Robert Wickens, while Maximilian Götz joined the scorers list with his eighth place finish.
Audi Team Abt Sportsline were at the top of the Teams' Championship after picking up points through Mortara, overtaking BMW Team RMG in the process. BMW Team RBM remained in third ahead of Audi Team Abt, while the first Mercedes backed team were Mercedes Team HWA II in fifth. The Stuttgart squad had slipped to third in the Brands' Championship, with BMW still leading the charge ahead of Audi.
