2016 Zandvoort Race 1 | 2016 Moscow Raceway Race 1 |
The 2016 Zandvoort Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Zandvoort 2016 Race 2, was the tenth round of the 2016 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in Zandvoort, North Holland, Netherlands, on 17 July 2016.[1] The race, which saw future Champion René Rast make his DTM debut in place of an injured Adrien Tambay, was won by Jamie Green at a canter as his main challengers suffered tyre issues.[2]
Rast, a veteran of several GT campaigns with Audi, was handed his debut after Tambay was forced to withdraw, the legacy of his start-line accident with Maximilian Götz in the Saturday Race.[3] The German racer would hence take over the #27 Audi Team Rosberg car, which was reissued with #72 as its race number for Rast.[3]
Qualifying would see Green sweep to pole position, despite being slapped with a €250 fine for speeding in the pitlane.[4] Gary Paffett was his closest challenger in second for Mercedes ahead of Christian Vietoris, while Timo Glock led the BMW charge from sixth.[4]
The start of the race would see Green instantly sweep across to the inside of the track, blocking Paffett from sending a lunge into Tarzan.[2] Behind, Vietoris made a slow start and was instantly mugged by a fast starting Robert Wickens, who would subsequently slip into the wake of Paffett.[2]
The early laps saw Wickens pass Paffett, before harassing Green for the lead with backup from Paffett and Vietoris.[2] Behind, Timo Scheider was spun out of the race on lap four after contact with Augusto Farfus, which saw the Brazilian slapped with a drive-through penalty, while DRS activation was delayed due to a technical glitch.[2]
DRS finally became available on lap nine, although Green held his grip on the lead and would thwart Wickens' renewed attempts to claim the lead.[2] Indeed, the Canadian's best shot came on lap eleven when he lunged inside Green at Tarzan, although the Brit just held on before leading the Canadian into the pits at the end of the lap.[2]
Green retained the lead, and with Wickens suffering a slower stop managed to establish a gap to the #6 Mercedes.[2] Elsewhere, Maximilian Götz would bounce out of the race after running wide at the Masterkurve, having avoided a clash between António Félix da Costa and Esteban Ocon ahead.[2] da Costa was then involved in another accident, as Miguel Molina smacked into the tail of the #13 BMW and destroyed the front of the #17 Audi.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, Green would reclaim the lead once the stops had been completed, and duly eased clear from Wickens as the three lead Mercedes struggled with their tyres.[2] Indeed, with five minutes to go Mercedes' charge effectively collapsed, with Wickens sliding off the track with a slow puncture and dropping down the field, while Vietoris had to retire with a suspension breaking puncture of his own.[2]
With that the race was run, with Green cruising through to claim victory, while Paffett had to nurse the #2 Mercedes to the chequered flag to secure second.[2] Edoardo Mortara was moved into third ahead of Marco Wittmann, while Nico Müller beat Timo Glock to fifth.[2] Mattias Ekström, Paul di Resta, Lucas Auer and Tom Blomqvist completed the top ten.[2]
Background[]
Marco Wittmann had retained the lead in the Championship as the season hit the halfway point, ending the first half of the campaign with 93 points. Second place was occupied by Saturday race winner Robert Wickens, moving onto 83 points, while Edoardo Mortara had slipped to third, a further ten off the lead. Jamie Green had also claimed 83 points during the first half of the season, while Paul di Resta completed the top five, with every driver on the score sheet.
In the Teams' Championship it was BMW Team RMG who led the charge at the halfway point, moving onto 133 points after the first race in Zandvoort. Audi Team Abt Sportsline had slipped to second on 125, while BMW Team RBM completed the top three. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, it was BMW who led the charge on 337 points, with Audi on 292, and Mercedes on 280.

- Italics indicate that a driver set fastest lap.
- * Vietoris was still classified despite retiring as he had completed 75% of the race distance.[5]
Milestones[]
- Tenth and final race for Esteban Ocon.[7]
- Debut race for René Rast.[3]
- Thirteenth victory for Jamie Green.
Standings[]
Marco Wittmann had retained the lead of the DTM Championship after his two top four finishes in Zandvoort, as Jamie Green leapt into second, seven points back after his victory in race two. Edoardo Mortara had slipped to third ahead of the first Mercedes backed driver in the form of Robert Wickens, who was just five away from the Italian after winning race one. At the foot of the table, meanwhile, there had been some shuffling as Daniel Juncadella and Esteban Ocon registered their first points of the season, meaning everyone bar Zandvoort debutante René Rast had scored in 2016.
After a strong weekend for their lead driver, it would be BMW and BMW Team RMG who headed to Moscow with the lead in the Teams' and Manufacturers' Championships, having continued to pick up points in both races. Audi Team Abt Sportsline had slipped to second, losing out by seven points, while BMW Team RBM were in third ahead of Audi Team Rosberg. Audi were still in second having picked up one win during the weekend, while Mercedes made some ground, despite the fact that their best team were found down in seventh.
