The 2017 Hockenheim Opening Race 1, otherwise known as the DTM Hockenheim Opening 2017 Race 1, was the opening round of the 2017 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on 6 May 2017.[1] The race would see Lucas Auer sweep to victory from pole position, having become a factory Mercedes driver ahead of the new season.[2]
It had been a busy winter for the DTM ahead of the 2017 season, with the introduction of a new base chassis, shared between the three manufacturers.[3] This had resulted in a reduction in the size of the grid, with Mercedes, Audi and BMW all reduced to running six cars apiece, with the former and latter losing their customer teams.[4]
Driver-wise there had been some shuffling, with former Champions Timo Scheider and Martin Tomczyk having both retired at the end of 2016.[5] Loïc Duval was hired to replace Scheider, BMW shuffled their drivers, while Edoardo Mortara moved from Audi to Mercedes, partnering Auer.[6]
Qualifying had also seen a revision, with points awarded to the top three qualifiers with 3 points for pole, 2 for second, and 1 point for third.[3] Auer duly opened the season with pole position ahead of Mercedes stalwart Gary Paffett, while Mortara would make his Mercedes debut from third.[7]
The start of the race would see Auer sprint into an early lead, while Timo Glock muscled ahead of Mortara to claim third.[2] The rest of the field thundered in behind them with the usual scatter across the tarmac outside of turn one, albeit with no major incidents.[2]
Glock duly scythed past Paffett for second on the second tour, although he would be unable to match Auer's pace in the early stages.[2] As a result Auer would establish a nine second lead by lap ten, while Glock slipped back into the sights of Paffett.[2]
Paffett would not be able to force his way back past the #16 BMW however, and as the pitstops loomed Glock would break clear, halving the gap to Auer.[2] They both subsequently stopped on lap seventeen, with a slow stop for Auer allowing Glock to regain some ground, only to emerge behind Mike Rockenfeller.[2]
Indeed, Rockenfeller had gambled on an early stop, and hence would shuffle through to a net second as the pitstops unfolded.[2] However, as the race ticked past the 40 minute mark the #16 BMW scythed ahead of the #99 Audi for fourth, before Mattias Ekström and debutante Loïc Duval made their stops from the lead.[2]
With five laps to go Glock moved into DRS range behind Auer, and duly demolished the rest of the gap over the following couple of tours.[2] A series of lunges would follow in the closing stages, coming to a climax with a lunge from Glock into the hairpin on the penultimate tour that resulted in contact between the pair.[2]
That, ultimately, settled the race, with Auer able to escape from Glock's slightly hobbled BMW to secure victory.[2] Rockenfeller, meanwhile, would secure third ahead of Mortara, while Ekström and a now battle hardened René Rast completed the top six.[2] Paffett was next up ahead of Paul di Resta, while Nico Müller and defending Champion Marco Wittmann completed the top ten.[2]
