The 2017 Hockenheim Opening Race 2, formally known as the DTM Hockenheim Opening 2017 Race 2, was the second race of the 2017 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on 7 May 2017.[1] The race would see Jamie Green sweep to his first victory of the campaign, surviving both a penalty and a late rain shower.[2]
Qualifying had also been beset by rain, with a damp circuit and constant drizzle making conditions tricky for the eighteen strong field.[3] BMW pilot Timo Glock emerged from the spray to secure pole position ahead of Audi's René Rast after a late run, while Edoardo Mortara led the Mercedes charge from fourth.[3]
The start of the race saw Glock sprint into the lead, with Green sitting right on his tail having leapt ahead of Rast.[2] Rast subsequently slipped back after getting squeezed to the apex of the first corner, before a collision in the midfield brought out the Safety Car.[2]
That collision involved Robert Wickens, Nico Müller and Loïc Duval, who had attempted to go three abreast into the deceptively tight first corner.[2] The inevitable contact saw Wickens elbow his way through on the inside, only for Müller to bounce off the side of Duval and back into Wickens, spinning the #6 Mercedes.[2] Wickens duly slid into the barriers on the outside of the circuit, Duval was forced into a spin, while Müller was left with damage to the front of his car.[2]
The restart brought with it the first taste of the Series' new race restart procedure, having adopted the "IndyCar" style restart.[4] As a result the field lined up two-by-two, with Glock and Green running to the start/finish line side-by-side awaiting the green flag.[2]
Green ultimately gained the initiative and swept into the lead, although protests from Glock's squad ensured that he was placed under investigation.[2] That investigation found that Green had effectively jumped the restart and hence slapped him with a five second time penalty, to be served at his stop.[2]
Yet, by the time that the penalty was issued Green had built a five second cushion, while Glock had tumbled back down the field.[2] Lucas Auer hence led the counter charge, with everyone waiting until an expected shower arrived midway through the race to make their mandatory stops.[2]
Green stopped a lap later than the majority of the field, and would serve his five second penalty to briefly handing the lead off to Auer.[2] Auer then stopped on the following tour and rejoined behind the Brit, before ruining his hopes of victory by sliding off at the hairpin.[2] That let Marco Wittmann through ahead of Gary Paffett, with the #2 Mercedes subsequently diving past the #11 BMW at the hairpin on the following tour.[2]
With that the race was run, with Green easing through the final laps to secure victory, while Paffett escaped from Wittmann to secure second.[2] Auer was next up ahead of a scrap between Müller and Paul di Resta, while Mike Rockenfeller had made two stops but still claimed seventh.[2] Glock, Bruno Spengler and Maro Engel scored the rest of the points.
Background[]
Lucas Auer opened the season with victory, and with his bonus points for claiming pole position had opened out a ten point lead. Timo Glock was his closest challenger in second while Mike Rockenfeller sat in third, two ahead of Edoardo Mortara. Mattias Ekström was next up ahead of René Rast, with Gary Paffett, Paul di Resta, Nico Müller and Marco Wittmann the other opening day scorers.
Mercedes-AMG BWT had secured the lead in the Teams' Championship after the opening day, holding a healthy total of 41 points. BMW Team RMR were in second ahead of Audi Team Phoenix, with every team bar BMW Team RBM having scored on the opening day. Elsewhere, Mercedes led the charge in the Manufacturers after the opening day of the campaign with 53 points, with Audi in second ahead of BMW.
