The 2017 Hungaroring Race 1, otherwise known as the DTM Budapest 2017 Race 1, was the fifth race of the 2017 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship staged at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród, Pest, Hungary, on 17 June 2017.[1] The race would see Paul di Resta sweep to victory, benefiting from an early stop and a well timed Safety Car intervention.[2]
Ahead of the race weekend there would be a change to how the success ballast was to be calculated, after all three manufacturers conceded that they had been gaming the system in previous races.[3] As a result the old system of using "ideal" times from qualifying was scrapped, with the ballast instead based on the best 28 laps from the race from each car, creating a bigger sample.[3]
René Rast would claim pole position during qualifying, leading a quintet of Audis to the front of the field.[4] Jamie Green was his closest challenger in second, while Augusto Farfus was the best non-Audi pilot in the field in sixth for BMW.[4]
The start of the race saw a swarm of Audis predictably claim the initiative, with Rast charging off the line to claim the lead.[2] Green tried to pass his teammate at the first corner but found himself instead being passed by Mattias Ekström while, at the back of the field, Tom Blomqvist got spun around by Maro Engel.[2]
Bruno Spengler duly became the first driver to make his planned pitstop at the end of the opening tour, as Rast set about establishing a lead over Ekström.[2] Indeed, the race would soon settle down with most drivers unable to overtake, prompting di Resta and Glock to also make early stops.[2]
That ultimately worked out beautifully for di Resta, as moments after he rejoined Maxime Martin would stop on track, having sustained damage from Blomqvist in the first lap accident.[2] That triggered an appearance for the safety car and hence dragged di Resta, Glock and Spengler onto the back of the field, and with their tyres up to temperature.[2]
The restart would see Ekström get the jump on Rast, while Farfus elbowed Lucas Auer off at turn two after a touch with Loïc Duval.[2] Robert Wickens would also get into a fight but came off worst with a race ending puncture, while di Resta gained a handful of places with his fresh tyres.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, the Audis were running nose-to-tail, with Ekström leading Rast, Green Mike Rockenfeller and Duval.[2] Ekström was the first of the quintet to stop on lap fifteen, Rockenfeller followed a lap later with Duval soon after, while Green and Rast waited until laps 21 and 23 respectively.[2]
All of that di Resta at the head of the field, while Glock and Spengler completed the top three ahead of the Audi herd.[2] The Audi pack was now led by Rockenfeller, who had passed Green and Rast in the pits before diving past Ekström after their stops, while Duval had lost touch with the group and slipped out of the top ten.[2]
With that the race was run, with di Resta sweeping through to secure victory a second clear of Glock and Spengler.[2] Rockenfeller was next up having harassed Spengler in the final laps, while Ekström led Rast and Green to the line, only for Green to be disqualified post-race.[5] Gary Paffett was hence classified in seventh ahead of Marco Wittmann, with Edoardo Mortara and Nico Müller rounding out the scorers.[2]
Background[]
Two wins in the opening four races had left Lucas Auer in charge of the Championship as the second race weekend came to a close, the Austrian driver leaving Lausitz with 69 points. Jamie Green, 2017's only other race winner, had moved into second on 53 points, while Gary Paffett was in third on 46. Mike Rockenfeller and Robert Wickens completed the top five, while Tom Blomqvist had scored his first points of the season in the second Lausitzring race.
In the Teams' Championship it was Mercedes-AMG BWT who led the charge, moving onto 88 points for the campaign after four races. Audi Team Rosberg were four behind in second, level with Mercedes-AMG Me but considered ahead due to having two victories. Mercedes, meanwhile, had command of the Manufacturers Championship, ten ahead of Audi in second while BMW were a lonely third on 64.
