2017 Hungaroring Race 1 | 2017 Norisring Race 1 |
The DTM Budapest 2017 Race 2, formally known as the 2017 Hungaroring Race 2, was the sixth race of the 2017 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród, Pest, Hungary, on 18 June 2017.[1] The race would see René Rast claim his maiden DTM victory from pole position, albeit after slipping behind veteran Audi stablemate Mattias Ekström.[2]
Qualifying had seen Audi dominate for the second race in a row, although Marco Wittmann in the #11 BMW would claim second behind Rast to deny Audi a top-five lock-out.[3] Ekström would secure third ahead of his teammate Nico Müller, while Lucas Auer was the lone Mercedes in the top ten in seventh.[3]
The start of the race saw Rast sweep into the lead unchallenged, while Wittmann bogged down and came under instant fire from Ekström and a hard charging Müller.[2] Indeed, Müller would make the best start and burst into second, as behind the rest of the field made it through without issue.[2]
The race soon settled, with Mike Rockenfeller stopping at the end of the opening tour, having already forfeited fifth on the grid for repairs pre-race.[2] Ekström, meanwhile, would become the first of the leaders to stop, dragging Loïc Duval and Edoardo Mortara in with him, while Jamie Green lunged past Wittmann at the first corner for fourth.[2]
Ekström's pace on fresh tyres proved to be very impressive, with the Swede lapping almost a second quicker that Rast out front once his tyres were up to temperature.[2] Green was the next of the leaders to stop on lap nine, and duly found himself undercut by Maxime Martin and Saturday race winner Paul di Resta, while Rast pitted two laps later.[2]
Rast emerged from his stop just behind Ekström, with the pair running in second and third behind Maro Engel, who had yet to stop.[2] Once the #63 Mercedes peeled in, however, the race for victory was on, with Rast tucking in behind Ekström to plot how he was going to retake the lead.[2]
With all the stops completed before the halfway point the race settled down, with the main fighting in the middle of the pack.[2] Indeed, Green would muscle his way past di Resta before once again harassing Wittmann, with the #53 Audi eventually triumphing with a stunning move around the outside of the #11 BMW at turn two.[2]
Back with the leaders and with five minutes to go Rast finally made his bid for lead, seizing the inside line for the hairpin before diving past the sister Audi on the brakes.[2] Ekström surrendered the inside line and tried to undertake the #33 car on the exit, although Rast made it to the apex and blocked the Swede's attempt to retaliate.[2]
With that the race was run, with Rast maintaining a one-second gap to Ekström through the closing laps to secure his maiden DTM triumph and the Championship lead.[2] Ekström himself was second ahead of Martin and Müller, while Green secured fifth ahead of di Resta.[2] They were chased across the line by Timo Glock, while Robert Wickens benefited from contact between Paffett and Rockenfeller to secure eighth ahead of the scraping duo.[2]
Background[]
Despite failing to score for the first time in 2017 it was still Lucas Auer whom led the Championship charge, ending the afternoon on 69 points. Jamie Green had likewise held onto second courtesy of his second place in qualifying, while Mike Rockenfeller had secured third on 53 points. Gary Paffett was next up in fourth, a point behind Rockenfeller, while Timo Glock had swapped places with Robert Wickens to complete the top five.
Audi Team Rosberg had risen to the top of the Teams' Championship after the first battle of the Hungaroring, ending Saturday with 97 points to their credit. They hence had moved seven ahead of Mercedes-AMG BWT, while Mercedes-AMG Me were level with their sister team on 90 points. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, Mercedes had seen their advantage cut to just six points by Audi, while BMW had kept pace in third.

- 3 Indicates a driver was awarded points for qualifying in the top three.[4]
- Bold indicates a driver started from pole.
- Italics indicate that a driver set fastest lap.
- * Wittmann was still classified despite retiring as he had completed 75% of the race distance.[2]
Milestones[]
- Maiden victory for René Rast.
Standings[]
Victory for René Rast would shoot the German racer straight to the top of the Championship hunt in Hungary, leading the Hungaroring with 70 points to his name. Indeed, a double non-score for Lucas Auer had resulted in the Austrian's former lead being completely obliterated, although Auer had only slipped a point behind the German racer. Jamie Green, meanwhile, had closed in in third on 65 points, while Mattias Ekström and Gary Paffett completed the top five.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Rosberg had massively enhanced their title credentials, moving onto 135 points after a double-score. They hence moved 39 points clear of Mercedes-AMG Me in second, while Audi Team Abt had moved a point behind the Mercedes Me squad in third. Likewise, Audi had seized the initiative in the Manufacturers' Championship on 284 points, having moved 50 clear of former leaders Mercedes.
