The 2017 Lausitzring Race 1, formally known as the DTM Lausitz 2017 Race 1, was the third round of the 2017 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany, on 20 May 2017.[1] The race would see Lucas Auer sweep to a dominant victory from pole position, in a fairly tame race around the shorter in-field circuit.[2]
Qualifying had seen Auer sweep to pole position late on, enhancing his early Championship advantage, while Robert Wickens secured second.[3] Maxime Martin was next up for BMW ahead of René Rast's Audi, with just nine-tenths of a second covering the entire field.[3]
The start of the race would see Auer leap into an early lead, leaving Wickens and Martin to scrap for second into the first corner.[2] Wickens subsequently secured the position, with the rest of the field pouring into the first corner behind them without issue.[2]
The early stages would see Martin go on the attack, lunging inside Wickens for second at turn one, while Timo Glock swept past Rast to claim fourth.[2] Elsewhere, Auer was sprinting away at the head of the field in the #22 Mercedes, while Jamie Green, who had been excluded from qualifying and started at the back, was the first driver to stop on lap six.[2]
Green suddenly set the timing screens alight with his fresh tyres, and would pass fellow early stoppers Mattias Ekström and Augusto Farfus, before sweeping past Marco Wittmann.[2] He duly caught onto the tail of Mike Rockenfeller after the German racer made his stop, with Tom Blomqvist and Paul di Resta being drawn in by both after their stops.[2]
That brawl would ultimately end in a collision, with Blomqvist's desperate lunge at di Resta at turn four ending with both spinning.[2] di Resta was blamed by the officials and awarded a penalty for closing the door, while Rockenfeller and Green went charging away to catch the lead group.[2]
Indeed, Paffett was the next man in their sights despite the Brit having yet to make his stop, and would drop behind both them and Ekström, who was shadowing them, after his stop.[2] Martin, Wickens and Auer, meanwhile, would all come in during the following laps, and were all too far ahead of the Rockenfeller train to be at risk.[2]
Rast inherited the lead from that point, although he would hand over the lead to Edoardo Mortara and Loïc Duval.[2] Once they stopped Auer was restored to the lead ahead of Wickens, whom had moved ahead of Martin, while Rast was closing in on the #36 BMW with time running out.[2]
With that the race was run, with Auer cruising through the closing stages to claim victory unopposed ahead of Wickens.[2] Behind, Rast jumped Martin to secure third for Audi, while Martin just kept Rockenfeller at bay in the final moments.[2] Paffett was next up ahead of Mortara, Ekström and Maro Engel, with Green having slipped to tenth in the closing stages as his tyres had faded.[2]
Background[]
Lucas Auer would retain the Championship lead, moving onto 40 points for the campaign after a win in the Saturday race and fourth in the Sunday bout. Jamie Green, meanwhile, had shot into second after his first victory of the season, while Gary Paffett had secured third, level with his compatriot on 26 points. Timo Glock and Mike Rockenfeller then completed the top five, with just five drivers having failed to score during the opening weekend.
Mercedes-AMG BWT led the Teams' Championship after their strong start to the season in Hockenheim, ending the weekend with 53 points to their credit. Audi Sport Team Rosberg were next up in second on 36, ten ahead of Mercedes-AMG Me in third. In the Manufacturers Championship Mercedes would lead the charge with 92 points after the opening round, moving thirteen ahead of Audi, while BMW were sat in third on 43.
