The 2017 Lausitzring Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Lausitz 2017 Race 2, was the fourth race of the 2017 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany on 21 May 2017.[1] The race would see Jamie Green secure his second victory of the campaign, winning a mid-race battle with Robert Wickens to claim the lead.[2]
The qualifying battle had been won by the aforementioned Wickens, heading a trio of British drivers.[3] Tom Blomqvist led that trio for BMW ahead of Green in the first of the Audi's, while Gary Paffett completed the top four in the #2 Mercedes.[3]
The start of the race would see Wickens convert pole into an early lead, while Blomqvist kept Green at bay to secure second.[2] The rest of the field would get away without issue, with a subsequent investigation revealing that Blomqvist had in-fact jumped the lights.[2]
Mike Rockenfeller and Mattias Ekström would be the first drivers to stop at the end of the opening tour, with the duo rejoining off the tail of the field.[2] Out front, meanwhile, Green would sweep past Blomqvist, who was to serve a five-second stop-go penalty, for second, before hunting after Wickens.[2]
Elsewhere, Championship leader Lucas Auer would make a rapid climb up to ninth in the early laps, before getting caught behind Augusto Farfus, who placed his BMW perfectly to block the Austrian.[2] Auer subsequently made an early stop on lap twelve, with Paffett diving in a lap later as the first of the leaders to stop, although both would be jumped by Ekström.[2]
Wickens was next in to leave Green in the lead, who duly delivered a strong in-lap and moved ahead, although the Canadian subsequently slipped back past as the Brit warmed up his tyres.[2] The remaining drivers then made their stops to shuffled Wickens back into the lead ahead of Green, while Ekström was up to third and dragging Paffett with him towards the leaders.[2]
With Ekström and Paffett closing Green began to increase the pressure he was putting on Wickens, and duly broke his resistance with fifteen minutes to go.[2] With that the #53 Audi was away, leaving Wickens to fend off Ekström and Paffett in the final laps.[2]
Green duly claimed victory at a canter, finishing six seconds clear ahead of Ekström, who had dived past Wickens late on to claim second.[2] The Canadian hence had to settle for third ahead of Paffett, while Rockenfeller led Nico Müller across the line for fifth.[2] René Rast was next up ahead of Martin and Marco Wittmann, while Auer secure tenth to maintain his early lead in the Championship.[2]
Background[]
Lucas Auer enhanced his Championship lead with his second victory of the campaign, heading into the Sunday Race with 68 points to his credit. Gary Paffett was his closest challenger in second ahead of Mike Rockenfeller, with the former holding half the points of leader Auer. Jamie Green and Timo Glock then completed the top five, with everyone bar Tom Blomqvist, Augusto Farfus and Loïc Duval having scored.
In the Teams' Championship it was Mercedes-AMG BWT whom led the charge, their enhanced tally of 87 points ahead of sister team Mercedes-AMG Me. Audi Team Rosberg were next up, two behind the latter of the Mercedes teams, while Audi Team Phoenix were in fourth ahead of Audi Team Abt. Mercedes, meanwhile, led the charge in the Manufacturers' Championship, holding 156 points ahead of Audi, while BMW were a distant third.
