2017 Norisring Race 2 | 2017 Moscow Raceway Race 2 |
The 2017 Moscow Raceway Race 1, otherwise known as the DTM Moskau 2017 Race 1, was the ninth race of the 2017 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Moscow Raceway in Volokolamsk, Moscow Oblast, Russia on 22 July 2017.[1] The race would see René Rast sweep to victory ahead of Mike Rockenfeller, who raced despite having sustained a broken foot at the previous round in Nuremburg.[2]
Ahead of the DTM Moskau round there would be another change to the success ballast rules, after Audi were reported as having gamed the system once again to have the lightest car despite leading all three Championships.[3] As a result the DMSB would instead take a random selection of laps from the top three drivers of each manufacturer to calculate the "ideal" lap, and issue ballast accordingly.[3]
Qualifying had seen Marco Wittmann secure pole position for BMW, although a penalty carried over from the Norisring meant he would actually start from sixth on the grid.[4] Rast would hence start the race from top spot ahead of Rockenfller, while Augusto Farfus, Timo Glock and Mattias Ekström were bumped into the top five by Wittmann's penalty.[4]
The start of the race would see Rockenfeller draw alongside Rast into the first corner, although the #99 Audi ultimately backed off and allowed the #33 car to take the lead.[2] The rest of the field made it through the first corner without issue, although as the field poured through turn five Glock would elbow Ekström off the circuit.[2]
There was more drama further around as Farfus tried to lunge past Rockenfeller at the final corner, only for the veteran German to slice across the nose of the #15 BMW as they turned in.[2] Farfus was left with front-end damage as Rockenfeller and Glock picked up warnings, while Wittmann shuffled through to third behind the #99 Audi as a result of the incidents.[2]
Unsurprisingly several drivers would make early stops, while the order at the head of the field would stabilise fairly quickly.[2] Indeed, there were no changes to the head of the field until Rockenfeller made his stop on lap fifteen, with Rast following him in a lap later.[2] The earlier stop allowed Rockenfeller to destroy Rast's advantage, although even with the aid of DRS the #99 Audi could not find a way through.[2]
Elsewhere, Robert Wickens had leapt up the field during the pitstops, and would claim third from Wittmann shortly after the stops.[2] Wittmann would retaliate ten laps later with a lunge at the final corner, as behind Gary Paffett led Ekström past an ailing Jamie Green.[2]
With that the race was run, with Rast keeping Rockenfeller at bay to secure his second victory of the campaign and the Championship lead.[2] Behind them, Wittmann would break clear of Wickens to secure third, while the Canadian racer was on his own in fourth ahead of Glock.[2] Lucas Auer was next up ahead of Paffett and Ekström, while Green and Maro Engel completed the scorers.[2]
Background[]
Mattias Ekström retained the lead as a result of the second race around the Norisring, despite the fact that he had yet to win a race at all in 2017. Lucas Auer, meanwhile, had moved back up to second, two off of the Swede, while Maxime Martin had rocketed up to third after his victory. Jamie Green was next up ahead of René Rast, with everyone bar Loïc Duval having scored as the eighth round of the season came to its conclusion.
In the Teams' Championship it was Audi Team Rosberg that would lead the hunt heading into the halfway point of the season, leaving Nuremburg with 147 points to their credit. That transcribed to a twenty point lead over Mercedes-AMG BWT, while Audi Team Abt had retained third on 125 points. Audi, meanwhile, would retain the lead in the Manufacturers' hunt ahead of Mercedes, while BMW had inched closer still in third.
