2017 Moscow Raceway Race 1 | 2017 Zandvoort Race 1 |
The 2017 Moscow Raceway Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Moskau 2017 Race 2, was the tenth race of the 2017 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Moscow Raceway in Volokolamsk, Moscow Oblast, Russia on 23 July 2017.[1] The race would see Maro Engel secure his first and only DTM victory, nine years after making his debut in 2008.[2]
There had been yet another revision to the ballast rules ahead of the second battle of Moscow, with the proposed changes for the Moscow meeting abandoned.[3] Instead, the DMSB opted to return to the original system established at the Hungaroring, with a view to completely abolishing success ballast later in the year.[3]
Qualifying had seen Tom Blomqvist storm to pole position, 0.061s ahead of Bruno Spengler, only to be disqualified for failing to provide a fuel sample.[4][5] Spengler would hence officially claim pole position ahead of Mattias Ekström and Championship leader René Rast, while Paul di Resta was the best Mercedes driver in fourth.[4]
Spengler and Ekström duly scrapped for the lead at the start of the race, with Spengler ultimately emerging ahead at the first corner.[2] Behind, the midfield crunch would see Loïc Duval smash into Maxime Martin and spin the Belgian to the back of the field, with the rest of the swarm making it through without issue.[2]
Marco Wittmann, Blomqvist and Duval would all stop at the end of the opening tour, while Martin carried on despite having visible damage to the front of his car.[2] Out front, meanwhile, Spengler established himself at the head of the field over Ekström, while several driver slipped into the pits over the following laps.[2]
Martin's decision not to stop due to damage ultimately proved pivotal to the race outcome, for the Belgian was forced to stop on track on lap six with his car aflame.[2] That triggered a Safety Car and hence moved those that had stopped back into contention, as Spengler led Ekström to the line for the side-by-side restart.[2]
Ekström would be unable to make a move at the restart, although he would subsequently force his way past the Canadian at the final corner on lap eleven, with both taking minor damage.[2] The leaders then broke clear as they tried to build a gap over those that had stopped, although Spengler and co. would ultimately emerge in the midfield.[2]
Engel hence emerged at the head of the field with Spengler the last to stop, chased by Wittmann and Duval, although the latter soon fell behind Blomqvist.[2] Duval duly let Ekström past without issue for third, before running wide and making contact with di Resta, leaving both drivers with damage.[2]
Ekström duly eased past Blomqvist, before diving past Wittmann for second, with Spengler emerging behind him after his stop.[2] Ekström subsequently hunted down Engel to challenge for victory in the closing stages, while Wittmann's pace collapsed in the closing stages and slipped down the field.[2]
With that the race was run, with Engel just managing to keep Ekström at bay to secure victory, while Spengler completed the podium.[2] Rast was next up ahead of Jamie Green, while Witmmann just held sixth ahead of Rockenfeller, Blomqvist, Lucas Auer and Robert Wickens.[2]
Background[]
Victory for René Rast would move the German racer back to the top of the Championship hunt, hitting the halfway point of the season with 99 points to his credit. Lucas Auer was next up in second, four off the lead, while former leader Mattias Ekström had slipped to third on 93 points. Maxime Martin was next up in third, facing a 21 point deficit to the leader, while Loïc Duval had remained as the only driver yet to score in 2017.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Rosberg would lead the charge after nine races, having moved onto 176 points for the campaign. Mercedes-AMG BWT were their closest challengers in second on 135, while Audi Team Abt were in third on 129. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, it was Audi who led the charge with 378 points, with Mercedes in second on 309 and BMW in third with 276.

Standings[]
Mattias Ekström would secure the lead as a result of the second battle of Moscow, the Swede moving onto 113 points having failed to win in 2017. That left him a point ahead of René Rast in second, while Lucas Auer had dropped to third on 99 points. Jamie Green was next up ahead of Maxime Martin, while Loïc Duval remained as the only driver yet to score.
Audi Team Rosberg had reinforced their grip on the Teams' Championship, moving onto 199 points after another strong weekend, leaving them 50 clear of Audi Team Abt. Abt themselves were nine ahead of Mercedes-AMG BWT, while BMW Team RBM and Mercedes-AMG Me completed the top five. Audi, meanwhile, headlined the Manufacturers' Championship with 421 points, 80 clear of Mercedes in second while BMW in third with 308.
