2017 Nürburgring Race 1 | 2017 Spielberg Race 1 |
The DTM Nürburg 2017 Race 2, otherwise known as the 2017 Nürburgring Race 2, was the fourteenth race of the 2017 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Nürburgring in Nürburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on 10 September 2017.[1] The race would see Robert Wickens sweep to his first victory of the campaign from third on the grid, as Mattias Ekström extended his Championship lead.[2]
Qualifying had seen Marco Wittmann secure pole position after a late rally, beating Paul di Resta by 0.116s.[3] Indeed, the top end of the field would be populated exclusively by BMWs and Mercedes, with Jamie Green the best placed of the Audis in eleventh.[3]
The start of the race would see di Resta beat Wittmann off the line, with the German racer just managing to hold second from Lucas Auer.[2] The rest of the field made it through without issue, with René Rast and Mike Rockenfeller opting to stop at the end of the opening lap.[2]
The early laps proved fairly tame, with di Resta establishing a lead over Wittmann, while Auer fended off the attentions of Wickens.[2] That was, until the Austrian racer made a mess of his exit from turn four and spun, and duly dropped to the back of the non-stoppers.[2]
With Auer out of contention Wittmann was free to go on the offensive, and after several failed lunges would finally elbow his way past di Resta for the lead at turn one on lap fifteen.[2] Wickens, meanwhile, would stop on that lap but slip behind Augusto Farfus, the first of those to have stopped, before both di Resta and Wittmann stopped two laps later.[2]
Farfus duly took both of them as they emerged on cold tyres, with Wickens likewise making it past di Resta with little resistance.[2] Wickens then managed to catch and pass Farfus after the Brazilian racer had let Wittmann go, before lunging past the German racer at turn one for the de facto lead with 20 minutes to go.[2]
Wittmann tried to respond, and would manage to run side-by-side with Wickens throughout the first sector on lap 27, before the Canadian reclaimed the initiative.[2] With that the #6 Mercedes would break clear, leaving Wittmann to come under fire from di Resta as those ahead made their stops.[2]
di Resta would eventually manage to get past Wittmann, and would go on to hunt down Wickens in the closing stages.[2] Elsewhere, Timo Glock nailed the back of Nico Müller at the chicane and took the Swiss racer out, although the German racer would escape without punishment.[2]
With that the race was run, with Wickens sweeping across the line just ahead of di Resta to secure victory, which proved to be his last in the DTM.[2] Behind, Wittmann would keep a charging Bruno Spengler at bay to secure third, while Maro Engel finished in fifth ahead of Championship leader Mattias Ekström.[2] Jamie Green was next up ahead of the damaged BMW of Glock, with Farfus and Tom Blomqvist completed the scorers.[2]
Background[]
The Championship battle had tightened up after the first fight around the Nürburgring, although Mattias Ekström would still head the charge on 128 points. Saturday race winner Lucas Auer had demolished the Swede's advantage to just a single point, having leapt from sixth to second, while René Rast had slipped to third but moved to within four of the leader. Mike Rockenfeller, meanwhile, had failed to score and slipped to fourth, while Jamie Green had inched closer to the fight as he moved into fifth.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Rosberg had enhanced their advantage at the head of the hunt, moving onto 231 points for the season. Audi Team Abt hence held second on 177, while Mercedes-AMG BWT had moved into third after a strong afternoon, moving onto 174 points. Audi, meanwhile, had seen their lead reduced at the head of the Manufacturers' Championship, while Mercedes' biggest points haul of the season had moved them back into second ahead of BMW.

Standings[]
Mattias Ekström had retained the lead at the head of the Championship hunt as the Nürburgring weekend came to a close, despite the fact that he had still yet to claim a race win in 2017. His lead was, however, a vulnerable one, with Lucas Auer just nine behind in second, while René Rast was a further three behind in third. Marco Wittmann was also a major title pretender in fourth on 115 points, with Jamie Green and Mike Rockenfeller also above 110 points.
In the Teams' Championship it was still Audi Team Rosberg who led the charge, having moved 52 points clear at the head of the hunt. Audi Team Abt were their closest challengers in second, while BMW Team RBM had moved up to third on 176 points, a tally shared with Mercedes-AMG Me. Audi, meanwhile, headed the Manufacturers' Championship with 550 points to their credit, 52 ahead of Mercedes and exactly 100 ahead of BMW.
