The 2017 Norisring Race 1, formally known as the DTM Nuremburg 2017 Race 1, was the seventh race of the 2017 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Norisring in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, on 1 July 2017.[1] The race would see Bruno Spengler lead teammate Maxime Martin to a one-two victory for BMW, securing his first win since the 2013 Spielberg Race.[2]
Qualifying had been a battle between Audi and BMW, with Martin edging out Championship leader René Rast to secure pole by 0.005s.[3] Spengler was next up ahead of Tom Blomqvist, while Lucas Auer was the lone Mercedes in the top ten in fifth.[3]
Heavy rain would wash over Nuremburg before the start of the race, although it stopped before the field assembled on the grid.[2] Regardless, the field would complete two formation laps before being lined up for the start, with huge puddles on the start/finish straight.[2]
The start saw Spengler ace his getaway, streaking between Martin and Rast as they bogged down to secure the lead.[2] Indeed, Martin in particular would struggle to getaway and slipped back, while Mattias Ekström rocketed up the field on the inside of the circuit, while Lucas Auer went around the outside.[2]
Ultimately Auer's run did not pay off, for he ran wide at the first hairpin and lost a lot of time, while Ekström emerged in second behind Spengler.[2] In the middle of the pack, meanwhile, Marco Wittmann and Timo Glock clashed on the exit of the hairpin, with Glock getting pushed into Robert Wickens and hence forcing the #6 Mercedes straight into the side of Auer's recovering car.[2] Wickens was left with heavy damage to his car and was forced to retire, Auer's #22 car was terminally wounded, while Wittmann and Glock continued with minor damage.[2]
The race quickly calmed down after that, with Spengler easing away at the head of the field, while Ekström secured second.[2] Martin, meanwhile, began his recovery with moves on Rast and Tom Blomqvist to secure third, before harassing Ekström for second on lap seven.[2]
Once Martin was through he would go chasing off after Spengler, although the Canadian was able to match his teammate's pace.[2] Furthermore, the circuit would begin to dry at a rapid rate after lap seven, and by lap fourteen the entire field was moving off line to cool their tyres.[2]
Jamie Green was the first driver to gamble on slicks, although he lost a lot of time trying to bring them up to temperature in the cool conditions.[2] The rest of the field swept in over the following laps once Green's times improved, with Spengler retained the lead from Martin, while Ekström gained on both.[2]
Martin briefly entertained hopes of claiming the lead after the stops, attacking Spengler with the aid of DRS, although the Canadian racer fended him off.[2] Spengler duly reinforced his lead with a series of quick laps, leaving Martin to fend off Ekström through to the end of the race.[2]
That fight would last through to the chequered flag, with Spengler cruising to victory while Martin blocked every lunge from Ekström to secure second.[2] Wittmann was next up ahead of Glock, while Blomqvist made it five BMWs in the top six ahead of Green.[2] Edoardo Mortara was the first of the Mercedes in eighth ahead of Nico Müller, while Gary Paffett scored the final point in tenth.[2]
Background[]
Victory for René Rast would shoot the German racer straight to the top of the Championship hunt in Hungary, leading the Hungaroring with 70 points to his name. Indeed, a double non-score for Lucas Auer had resulted in the Austrian's former lead being completely obliterated, although Auer had only slipped a point behind the German racer. Jamie Green, meanwhile, had closed in in third on 65 points, while Mattias Ekström and Gary Paffett completed the top five.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Rosberg had massively enhanced their title credentials, moving onto 135 points after a double-score. They hence moved 39 points clear of Mercedes-AMG Me in second, while Audi Team Abt had moved a point behind the Mercedes Me squad in third. Likewise, Audi had seized the initiative in the Manufacturers' Championship on 284 points, having moved 50 clear of former leaders Mercedes.
