2017 Norisring Race 1 | 2017 Moscow Raceway Race 1 |
The DTM Nuremburg 2017 Race 2, otherwise known as the 2017 Norisring Race 2, was the eighth race of the 2017 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Norisring in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, on 2 July 2017.[1] The race, which was won by Maxime Martin, would be overshadowed by a colossal accident between Gary Paffett and Mike Rockenfeller that triggered a red flag.[2]
Qualifying would see Tom Blomqvist sweep to his first pole position of the season, edging out Robert Wickens of Mercedes by 0.004s.[3] Nico Müller was next up to make it three manufacturers in the top three, while Championship leader Mattias Ekström would start from fifth behind Saturday winner Bruno Spengler.[3]
The start of the race, which was dry, would see Wickens get the jump on Blomqvist, while Spengler shot through from fourth to secure second.[2] Lucas Auer also made a smart getaway to claim third into the hairpin, as Müller, whom had initially claimed second, got elbowed out at the hairpin.[2]
Several drivers, including Auer, would sweep into the pots at the end of the opening lap, gambling on an early stop.[2] Otherwise, the order would quickly settle, with most of the field completing their mandatory stops within the opening ten minutes.[2]
However, there would be drama towards the latter part of the stops, as Wickens suffered a slow stop and dropped back.[2] That left him in the middle of the pack, before contact with René Rast at the first corner resulted in both drivers receiving damage and leaving debris on track.[2]
Their debris field triggered a Safety Car, which remained out for five minutes before the field were released.[2] Loïc Duval would subsequently head the field at the restart having yet to stop, although a mistake at the first corner opened the door for Martin to secure the lead head of Spengler and Auer, although contact later during the lap left the Canadian with a puncture.[2]
A couple of minutes later and the race was stopped altogether, as an out-of-control Paffett slammed into Rockenfeller at the first hairpin, destroying both cars.[2] The trigger had been contact between Green and Paffett on the run to the Grundig Kehre that spat the #2 Mercedes into the barriers, before sliding at unabated speed towards the inside of the hairpin.[2] Paffett's car then struck the driver's side door of Rockenfeller's car and sent the #99 Audi into the barrier, with both drivers taken to hospital as a result.[2][4]
The restart came with thirty minutes left on the clock, with two formation laps behind the safety car completed before the field completed a single-file restart.[2] This time Auer managed to jump Martin at the hairpin to secure the lead, before the Belgian racer elbowed his way back past three laps later.[2]
With that the fight for victory was over, with a tamer second half of the race seeing Martin just keep Auer at bay to claim the win.[2] Auer duly secured second after a late mistake brought him under fire from those behind, with Edoardo Mortara emerging from that fight with third.[2] Ekström was next up ahead of Wittmann having finished three-abreast with Mortara at the finish line, Paul di Resta was a lonely sixth, while Augusto Farfus, Green, Blomqvist and Glock secured the remaining points.[2]
Background[]
Mattias Ekström emerged at the head of the hunt after the first battle of Nuremburg, ending Saturday with 77 points to his credit. That left him five ahead of former leader René Rast, while Jamie Green was six points off in third. Lucas Auer was next after slipping from second, falling eight off the lead, while Timo Glock completed the top five.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Rosberg led the charge with 143 points, 31 ahead of Audi Team Abt in second. Mercedes-AMG Me were next up in third, having slipped from second, while BMW Team RBM had moved up to fourth to lead BMW's charge. In the Manufacturers' Championship Audi would enhance their lead to 70 points over Mercedes, while BMW had enjoyed their best points haul of the campaign and moved closer to Mercedes.

Standings[]
Mattias Ekström retained the lead as a result of the second race around the Norisring, despite the fact that he had yet to win a race at all in 2017. Lucas Auer, meanwhile, had moved back up to second, two off of the Swede, while Maxime Martin had rocketed up to third after his victory. Jamie Green was next up ahead of René Rast, with everyone bar Loïc Duval having scored as the eighth round of the season came to its conclusion.
In the Teams' Championship it was Audi Team Rosberg that would lead the hunt heading into the halfway point of the season, leaving Nuremburg with 147 points to their credit. That transcribed to a twenty point lead over Mercedes-AMG BWT, while Audi Team Abt had retained third on 125 points. Audi, meanwhile, would retain the lead in the Manufacturers' hunt ahead of Mercedes, while BMW had inched closer still in third.
