The 2017 Zandvoort Race 1, formally known as the DTM Zandvoort 2017 Race 1, was the eleventh round of the 2017 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in Zandvoort, North Holland, Netherlands, on 19 August 2017.[1] The race would see Timo Glock lead a BMW one-two-three across the line, as the Championship restarted after the annual six week summer-break.[2]
During the summer-break Mercedes announced that they would be leaving the DTM at the end of the 2018 Season, replacing their DTM programme with a full blown factory effort in the FIA Formula E Championship.[3] That came as a shock to the rest of the paddock and caused major concern for both the DMSB and fellow manufacturers Audi and BMW, who were both quick to point out that they needed more competition from other manufacturers if they were to continue their own DTM programmes.[3]
Further reasons for Mercedes' departure were put down to the fact that they had been heavily penalised by the ballast system, which was highlighted by the fact that their only driver in the top ten after qualifying would be Gary Paffett.[4] At the head of the field, meanwhile, Glock would lead a BMW quartet to the head of the field ahead of René Rast and Loïc Duval as the best of the Audis, while Paffett was a lowly eighth.[4]
The start of the race would see Glock hold the lead, while Marco Wittmann stormed through from fourth to secure second.[2] Augusto Farfus would also fall to Maxime Martin having started in second, while the rest of the field gave chase behind Rast's #33 Audi.[2]
The early laps would see Rast attack Farfus, although having briefly slipped behind the #33 Audi, Farfus barged his way back ahead, and received a warning for his efforts.[2] Mattias Ekström, meanwhile, would be the first driver to stop, although cold tyres saw him slide into the gravel at Tarzan, before spinning while trying to clean his now gravel filled car.[2]
Wittmann and Martin would make their stops on lap eight, while Glock stopped on lap nine and was caught by the duo as he warmed up his tyres.[2] However, once his tyres were up to temperature he would have enough pace to prevent Wittmann and Martin from attacking, and duly began catching Maro Engel who had yet to stop.[2]
Glock led Wittmann past Engel without issue, while Martin got stuck behind the #63 Mercedes and lost a lot of time, with the pair running side-by-side numerous times before Martin finally claimed the position.[2] Engel duly stopped at the end of that lap, Rast stopped from the lead at lap later, while Mike Rockenfeller began to reel in Martin.[2]
Indeed, the race was rapidly building to a crescendo, with Wittmann catching Glock, Martin catching Witmann, and Rockenfeller catching all three.[2] With five minutes to go all four were in DRS range, as behind Ekström would retire with internal damage to his car, while Rast used up all of his DRS uses trying to get onto the back of the lead group and duly slipped back down the field.[2]
Yet, there would be no changes at the head of the pack in the final moments, with Glock sweeping through to secure victory a tenth ahead of Wittmann.[2] Martin was also within a second in third, while Rockenfeller secured fourth having slipped off the back of the Belgian.[2] Jamie Green was next up ahead of Farfus, di Resta and Paffett, while Rast and Nico Müller completed the scorers.[2]
Background[]
Mattias Ekström would secure the lead as a result of the second battle of Moscow, the Swede moving onto 113 points having failed to win in 2017. That left him a point ahead of René Rast in second, while Lucas Auer had dropped to third on 99 points. Jamie Green was next up ahead of Maxime Martin, while Loïc Duval remained as the only driver yet to score.
Audi Team Rosberg had reinforced their grip on the Teams' Championship, moving onto 199 points after another strong weekend, leaving them 50 clear of Audi Team Abt. Abt themselves were nine ahead of Mercedes-AMG BWT, while BMW Team RBM and Mercedes-AMG Me completed the top five. Audi, meanwhile, headlined the Manufacturers' Championship with 421 points, 80 clear of Mercedes in second while BMW in third with 308.
