The 2017 Zandvoort Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Zandvoort 2017 Race 2, was the twelfth race of the 2017 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in Zandvoort, North Holland, Netherlands on 20 August 2017.[1] The race would see Mike Rockenfeller claim victory at the head of an all Audi top four, albeit after Marco Wittmann was disqualified after post-race scrutineering.[2][3]
Augusto Farfus had conquered qualifying to secure pole position, beating BMW Team RMG teammate Wittmann and stablemate Maxime Martin.[4] Behind, Jamie Green was the best of the Audi pilots in fourth, Maro Engel headed the Mercedes challenge from ninth, before several penalties shuffled the order, the most notable seeing Saturday winner Timo Glock excluded.[4]
There was drama before the race too, as Tom Blomqvist managed to hit an advertising board on the formation lap and took off his left door, meaning he had to start from the pitlane.[2] Martin, meanwhile, would make a mess of his start and limp away from the grid at the start, with the rest of the field just making it past without collecting him.[2]
Engel was the main beneficiary from Martin's poor start, surviving the squeeze to rocket into fourth, as Wittmann secured the lead ahead of Farfus and Green.[2] Farfus duly decided to stop at the end of the opening tour, leading Lucas Auer, Bruno Spengler and Paul di Resta in with him.[2]
Green threw away third on the second tour and opted to make his stop, only to rejoin and collide with Robert Wickens after his stop.[2] They both continued with hobbled cars, as elsewhere, Blomqvist overtook René Rast and opened the door for Engel to attack, only for the German racer to smash into the #33 Audi and remove Rast from the race.[2]
The rest of the field made their stops to leave Loïc Duval at the head of the field ahead of Edoardo Mortara, who were both on an alternate strategy and would make their stops later in the race.[2] However, a puncture for Mortara on lap 22 ended his hopes, with the Italian also serving a penalty, leaving Duval on his own at the head of the field, while Wittmann was in second ahead of Rockenfeller.[2]
The closing stages saw Mattias Ekström become a rolling road-block, the Swede running two seconds slower than those ahead of him in fourth.[2] He hence slipped a second back and would come under fire from Gary Paffett and Nico Müller, as Wittmann caught and passed Duval before the Frenchman made his stop.[2]
With that the race was run, with Wittmann sweeping across the line to secure his first win of the campaign, while Rockenfeller was glued to his tail in second.[2] Duval completed the podium to score his first points finish, while Ekström just kept Müller and Paffett at bay across the line for fourth.[2] Martin, Glock, Farfus and Green secured the remaining points.[2]
However, there would be a major change to the results after the race, as Wittmann was disqualified from the race after failing to provide a fuel sample.[3] That put Ekström onto the podium and hence increased his Championship lead to fourteen points, while Spengler was put into the points.[3]
Background[]
René Rast moved to the top of the Championship after the opening race in Zandvoort, moving onto 114 points for the campaign. Former leader Mattias Ekström hence slipped to second after his non-score, although was only a point behind, while Lucas Auer had held onto third. Behind, Timo Glock had shot up from eighth to fourth after his first win of the campaign, while Jamie Green had retained his place in the top five.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Rosberg had retained the initiative, moving onto 211 points for the season. BMW Team RBM were next up in second, having chipped away at the former's advantage, while Audi Team Abt had lost ground and slipped to third. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, Audi had held onto their lead, while BMW had moved ahead of Mercedes.
