The DTM Brands Hatch 2018 Race 1, otherwise known as the 2018 Brands Hatch Race 1, was the eleventh round of the 2018 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at Brands Hatch in West Kingsdown, Kent, UK, on 11 August 2018.[1] The race would see Daniel Juncadella secure his maiden DTM triumph, as Gary Paffett eked out his Championship lead.[2]
Ahead of the race it was announced that British sportscar manufacturer Aston Martin would be joining the DTM, initially planning to enter the series in 2020.[3] The British marque would form a partnership with HWA, whom had run Mercedes' factory DTM programme since 2000 to supply engines, with AF Racing AG would build and run the cars, based around the Aston Martin Vantage.[4]
Qualifying would see Merceceds again top the field, with Juncadella sweeping to pole position ahead of Lucas Auer.[5] Best of the rest was René Rast for Audi, while Philipp Eng led the BMW charge from fourth alongside the defending Champion.[5]
The start of the race would see Juncadella make a poor getaway, allowing Auer to charge ahead to secure the lead, while Rast darted around the #23 Mercedes to secure second.[2] Juncadella would hence scramble through with third, and duly repassed Rast at the end of the opening tour to secure second as the German dived in to serve his stop.[2]
At the start of the second tour a Slow Zone would be deployed, for Loïc Duval had slid straight off the circuit at Paddock Hill Bend and into the barriers.[2] Once the Slow Zone was withdrawn Augusto Farfus and Eng swept in to serve their stops, with Rast able to overtake the latter as the Austrian emerged on cold tyres.[2]
Gary Paffett was another early pit caller, although he would be swamped by the trio of Farfus, Rast and Eng when he rejoined on cold tyres.[2] Juncadella, meanwhile, would dive in on lap seven and rejoined safely ahead of Farfus, while Auer's stop a lap later left the #22 Mercedes in between the Spaniard and the Brazilian.[2]
Edoardo Mortara was left in the lead of the race ahead of Pascal Wehrlein, with the Italian making his stop on lap eleven to rejoin in eighth.[2] Wehrlein would then lead until making his stop on lap fifteen, rejoining in seventh, to leave Juncadella at the head of the field.[2]
Juncadella escaped after that, with Farfus fighting with Auer for second having passed the Austrian when the #22 Mercedes had cold tyres after its stop.[2] Rast, meanwhile, would stalk them but was unable to join the fight, while Paffett ran in a safe sixth with Wehrlein and Mortara holding position behind their title pretending teammate.[2]
With that the race was run, with Juncadella sweeping across the line to secure his maiden DTM victory, having established a seven second lead.[2] Farfus was next up having escaped from Auer in the closing stages, while Rast was a lonely fourth having similarly dropped back.[2] Eng was next up ahead of Paffett, Wehrlein and Mortara, while Marco Wittmann and Mike Rockenfeller had a late fight for ninth that was won by the #11 BMW.[2]
Background[]
Gary Paffett had enhanced his Championship lead, moving onto 148 points for the campaign after his sixth podium of the season. Paul di Resta was next up in second, 27 points behind, while Timo Glock had retained third but slipped 47 behind. Marco Wittmann and Edoardo Mortara then completed the top five, while Zandvoort race winner René Rast completed the top nine.
In the Teams' Championship it was still Mercedes-AMG Petronas who led the charge, moving onto 213 points after ten races. Sister squad Mercedes-AMG Silberpfeil were next up in second on 186, while BMW Team RMR completed the top three on 168. Mercedes, meanwhile, had complete control in the Manufacturers' Championship, having moved 189 points clear of BMW in second, while Audi were a distant third on 165.
