The DTM Brands Hatch 2018 Race 2, otherwise known as the 2018 Brands Hatch Race 2, was the twelfth round of the 2018 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at Brands Hatch in West Kingsdown, Kent, UK, on 12 August 2018.[1] The race would see Paul di Resta sweep to victory at his home race, inching him closer to Championship leader, compatriot and teammate Gary Paffett.[2]
Qualifying would see the two Brits engage each other in a tight duel for pole, a battle won by the Englishman from the Scotsman by 0.073s.[3] Pascal Wehrlein would attempt to join the fight but fell a few hundredths behind in third, while René Rast headed the Audi challenge from third and Augusto Farfus led BMW's charge from seventh.[3]
The start of the race saw the Brits continue their battle, with di Resta running around the outside of Paddock Hill Bend and Druids to claim the race lead from Paffett.[2] Behind, Rast tried the same manoeuvre on Wehrlein, but was elbowed wide by the #94 Mercedes, allowing Jamie Green to sneak into fourth.[2]
However, the race would be put on pause a few moments later, for a collision between Lucas Auer, Robin Frijns and Farfus left the #15 BMW with heavy damage, while Frijns slid into the barriers.[2] The Safety Car was scrambled to recover the Dutchman, although he would drag himself out and rejoin, while Farfus dragged his damaged car to the pits to have the damaged body work removed.[2]
The race resumed with the IndyCar style restart, with di Resta sprinting ahead of Paffett, while Rast remained behind Wehrlein and Green.[2] After that the race would quickly settle down, with the majority of the field sweeping in to serve their stops before the end of lap nine, leaving Green and Frijns at the head of the hunt on an alternate plan.[2]
di Resta was left in the de facto lead in third ahead of Paffett, while Rast remained glued to their tail having jumped Wehrlein in the pits.[2] The #33 Audi duly began to harass Paffett for second, with the Englishman using DRS from di Resta to aid his defence.[2]
They duly moved into the top three once Green and Frijns made their stops on laps 31 and 24 respectively, with Green initially rejoining in fourth, only to be instantly mugged by Wehrlein and Wittmann.[2] The Brit would, however, force the issue a little more with Wittmann, elbowing the #11 BMW wide as it passed him at Surtees, earning Green a drive-through penalty.[2]
With that the race was run, with di Resta sweeping across the line a second ahead of Paffett to secure the win, while Paffett kept Rast at bay for second.[2] Wehrlein was next up ahead of Wittmann, while Mike Rockenfeller had to settle for sixth after being rebuffed by Wittmann on the final stages.[2] Philipp Eng, Auer, Daniel Juncadella and Nico Müller scored the remaining points.[2]
Background[]
Gary Paffett had retained the lead in the Championship, and had enhanced his advantage to 35 points over second placed Paul di Resta. Behind, Lucas Auer had moved into third with 106 points, climbing ahead of Timo Glock, while Edoardo Mortara had moved level with the German on 101. Marco Wittmann was next up having slipped down from fourth, while Augusto Farfus had been Saturday's biggest mover, gaining four positions.
In the Teams' Championship it was still Mercedes-AMG Petronas who led the charge, although sister squad Mercedes-AMG Silberpfeil had closed the gap to twenty points. BMW Team RMR was next up ahead of 178 points, while Mercedes-AMG Remus and BMW Team RMG completed the top five. Mercedes, meanwhile, had again enhanced their lead in the Manufacturers' Championship, opening out a 222 point advantage over BMW.
