The 2018 Hockenheim Opening Race 1, otherwise known as the DTM Hockenheim Opening 2018, was the opening round of the 2018 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany on 5 May 2018.[1] The race would see Gary Paffett secure his first victory since 2013, in a race dominated by Mercedes.[2]
René Rast would start the season as the reigning Champion, with Audi as the reigning Manufacturers Champions and Audi Sport Team Rosberg as the Teams' Champions.[3] However, there had been some significant changes to Audi's driver lineup, as lead driver Mattias Ekström formally retired, with his seat being taken by Robin Frijns.[4]
However, Ekström would race in the 2018 season opener, being entered as a "wildcard" entry for Audi to celebrate his DTM career.[5] Elsewhere, 2015 Champion Pascal Wehrlein would return to the series for Mercedes after losing his Formula One seat, while Philipp Eng and Joel Eriksson were hired by BMW to replace Maxime Martin and Tom Blomqvist.[6]
Qualifying for the opening race of the season would see Paffett secure pole position, although his effort was over a second slower than 2017 due to the new standardised aero rules.[7] Marco Wittmann led the counter-charge from second ahead of Timo Glock, while Rast was the best of the Audi drivers in ninth.[7]
The start of the race would see Paffett launch clear of Wittmann to secure the lead, while Glock fended off the attentions of Lucas Auer.[2] The rest of the field made it through the first corner without issue, although there were a couple of near-misses at the back as Eng was slow to get away.[2]
The early laps would see Auer provide the most entertainment, passing Glock and Wittmann in short order before challenging Paffett for the lead.[2] He duly slid past his teammate at the hairpin on lap four, a move mirrored by Glock on Wittmann, while Wehrlein closed in on the BMWs in fifth.[2]
Jamie Green would kick off the pitstop phase on lap six, while Wehrlein dragged Edoardo Mortara past Wittmann on lap ten, prompting Wittmann to stop with stablemate Glock.[2] Wehrlein stopped two laps later and rejoined back behind Wittmann and a charging Mike Rockenfeller, while Paffett pitted from second and rejoined safely ahead of Glock.[2]
Auer, meanwhile, would suffer a slow stop a lap after Paffett, and would duly slip behind the Brit during his outlap with cold tyres.[2] Glock also attacked the Austrian but could not force his way through, as up front Rast and Daniel Juncadella stopped and rejoined side-by-side out of the pits, earning both a trip to the stewards after the race.[2]
With that the race was run, with Paffett easing ahead of Auer to secure his 21st victory in the DTM, with Auer and Glock completing the top three.[2] Mortara was next up having jumped Wehrlein, while Bruno Spengler fought off Paul di Resta and Juncadella for sixth, with Rast and Loïc Duval completing the scorers.[2]
