The 2018 Hockenheim Opening Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Hockenheim Opening 2018 Race 2, was the second race of the 2018 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany on 6 May 2018.[1] The race would see an epic duel between Timo Glock and Gary Paffett steal the show after the stops, although DRS use would ultimately dictate the fight.[2]

Glock would win the battle of qualifying, overhauling an early effort from René Rast to secure pole position ahead of the reigning Champion.[3] Joel Eriksson was next up in third ahead of the first of the Mercedes in the hands of Edoardo Mortara, while Paffett would start from tenth.[3]

The start of the race would see Edoardo Mortara and Daniel Juncadella stall, resulting in chaos behind as drivers darted around the two crawling Mercedes.[2] Out front, meanwhile, Lucas Auer would rocket into third behind Glock and Rast, although it was quickly revealed that he had in-fact jumped the lights.[2]

Regardless of his penalty, which would be issued in the form of a five-second hold during his pitstop, Auer would continue to fight, easing past Rast on lap three.[2] Elsewhere, Paffett was on the warpath, rising from tenth to fifth in the early stages, and was pushing stablemate Paul di Resta hard to catch Rast.[2]

di Resta released Paffett on lap eight, as behind the delayed Juncadella, who had stalled after jumping the start, made his compulsory stop.[2] Paffett's charge continued with a move on Rast a lap later, while Mike Rockenfeller would make some progress with moves on Eriksson and di Resta, the latter opting to stop in that moment.[2]

Glock stopped from the lead on lap 14 as Paffett moved into striking position behind Auer, with the #2 Mercedes duly scything past the sister #22 car a lap later.[2] The Brit subsequently stopped at the end of the lap and rejoined behind Glock and di Resta, although the Scot pulled aside to let his stablemate through.[2]

With that Paffett was on Glock's tail, and duly proceeded to throw everything he had at the ex-Formula One racer for the de facto lead.[2] Indeed, at the height of the battle the pair would run side-by-side for almost a full lap before Glock finally stamped his authority, with Paffett's challenge fading when he ran out of DRS uses.[2] That allowed Rockenfeller, who jumped di Resta in the pits, to catch and pass him on the final lap.[2]

With that the race was run, with Glock easing away to secure victory from Rockenfeller by two seconds, while Paffett had to settle for third.[2] Eriksson was next ahead of Loïc Duval, while Pascal Wehrlein fought with René Rast in the Frenchman's wake to secure sixth.[2] Bruno Spengler was next up ahead of fading di Resta, while Augusto Farfus secured the final point with tenth.[2]

Background[]

Victory for Gary Paffett had moved him to the top of the Championship after the opening battle of the season, the Brit having established a ten point lead with the bonus points for pole. Lucas Auer was his closest challenger in second ahead of Timo Glock, two points splitting them, while Edoardo Mortara and Pascal Wehrlein completed the top five. Bruno Spengler, Paul di Resta, Daniel Juncadella, René Rast, Marco Wittmann and Loïc Duval had also scored in race one of the campaign.

In the Teams' Championship it was Mercedes-AMG Petronas who led the charge after the first race of the season, having claimed 38 points on the opening day. Mercedes-AMG Silberpfeil were next up in second, while BMW Team RMR were in third on 16. Elsewhere, Mercedes led the charge in the Manufacturers' Championship having dominated the opening day, opening out an early lead of 52 points over BMW in second.
