2018 Lausitzring Race 2 | 2018 Hungaroring Race 2 |
The 2018 Hungaroring Race 1, otherwise known as the DTM Budapest 2018 Race 1, was the fifth race of the 2018 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród, Pest, Hungary on 2 June 2018.[1] The race would see Paul di Resta sweep to victory for Mercedes, fending off stablemate Lucas Auer after the pair had swapped places at the behest of the Stuttgart manufacturer mid-race.[2]
Qualifying had seen di Resta secure pole position, beating away a resurgent Nico Müller by 0.135s.[3] Lucas Auer was next up ahead of the returning René Rast, while Augusto Farfus was the best of the BMW drivers in eighth.[3]
The start of the race would see di Resta ace his getaway to secure the lead, moving across to block any potential lunge from Müller.[2] That move allowed Auer to attack and pass the Swiss racer on the run to turn two, although Müller retaliated a few corners later and reclaimed second.[2]
The end of the opening lap saw Bruno Spengler, Jamie Green and Philipp Eng make their stops, while Timo Glock and Joel Eriksson made their stops a lap later.[2] Indeed, most of the field would enter the pits in the early stages, with the officials declaring the circuit wet after reports of rainfall from several drivers.[2]
Regardless, the entire field would stick with slicks, with Auer stopping from third as the first of the lead drivers.[2] di Resta was next in on lap ten but suffered a slow stop, resulting in Auer jumping him as the Scot rejoined with cold tyres.[2] Müller would subsequently rejoin ahead of both of them, although an instant lock-up on cold tyres into the first corner allowed both Mercedes to flash through.[2]
Auer and di Resta would switch places after that, for Auer's pace was slower than that of race leader Rast, who had the potential to jump both and claim the de facto lead.[2] However, with the Scot ahead their pace improved as well as Müller's, meaning Rast rejoined behind the trio in fourth.[2]
With that the race was run, with di Resta surviving a late attack from Auer to secure victory, while Müller trailed them in third.[2] Indeed, the Swiss racer himself would have to keep a charging Rast at bay to complete the podium, while Edoardo Mortara claimed a lonely fifth.[2] Gary Paffett, meanwhile, finished sixth to claim the Championship lead, with Robin Frijns, Loïc Duval, Green and Daniel Juncadella completing the scorers.[2]
Background[]
Timo Glock had just held onto the initiative in the DTM Championship as the weekend in Lausitz came to an end, leaving with 72 points to his name. Indeed, race winner Gary Paffett had carved away at the German's lead to leave Lausitz just a point behind, with a 32 point gap back to third placed Pascal Wehrlein. Edoardo Mortara was next up ahead of Lucas Auer to complete the top five, with all drivers bar Nico Müller having scored in 2018 after four races.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas had returned to the head of the pack after the second battle of the Lausitz, having claimed 110 points after the opening four races. BMW Team RMR were their closest challengers in second, twelve behind, while Mercedes-AMG Silberpfeil completed the top three on 70. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, it was Mercedes whom led the charge on 212 points, with BMW and Audi having both lost ground.

- 3 Indicates a driver was awarded points for qualifying in the top three.[4]
- Bold indicates a driver started from pole.
- Italics indicate that a driver set fastest lap.
Milestones[]
- Ninth win for Paul di Resta.
- Also the Scot's first win since the 2017 Hungaroring Race 1.
Standings[]
Gary Paffett moved to the top of the Championship as a result of the first battle in Budapest, opening out a seven point lead over former leader Timo Glock. Yet, those two still held a fair margin over the chasing pack, with Paul di Resta leading the counter-charge on 56 points, and hence was sixteen behind Glock. Lucas Auer was next up ahead of Edoardo Mortara, who had also inched closer to the hunt, while Nico Müller's first points of the campaign meant that all eighteen drivers had scored after five rounds.
In the Teams' Championship it was Mercedes-AMG Petronas who still led the field, moving onto 118 points for the season. Sister squad Mercedes-AMG Silberpfeil had moved into second with 99 points, while BMW Team RMR had dropped to third, but were just a point behind Silberpfeil. Mercedes, meanwhile, would continue to head the Manufacturers' challenge, moving onto 278 points, with BMW and Audi having lost more ground.
