2018 Hungaroring Race 1 | 2018 Norisring Race 1 |
The DTM Budapest 2018 Race 2, otherwise known as the 2018 Hungaroring Race 2, was the sixth race of the 2018 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród, Pest, Hungary, on 3 June 2018.[1] The race would see Marco Wittmann secure victory, after a red flag was required to allow medical crews to attend injured mechanics in the pitlane after a series of accidents.[2]
Qualifying had seen Mercedes dominate the upper echelons of the field, with Lucas Auer heading a quintet of Stuttgart machinery.[3] Pascal Wehrlein would share the front row with the Austrian, as René Rast secured the best starting position for Audi in sixth, while Timo Glock claimed eighth for BMW.[3]
The start of the race saw Auer secure an early lead from pole, with the majority of the Mercedes hoard giving chase behind.[2] Daniel Juncadella, the sixth Mercedes, would make it up with them with a lunge around the outside of Rast through turn one, with the rest of the field filling in behind them.[2]
An eventful opening lap would see Nico Müller tip Glock into a spin at turn three, prompting the German to stop, with Joel Eriksson and Mike Rockenfeller also stopping.[2] However, the race soon settled into a procession at the notoriously narrow Hungaroring, until rain arrived at the start of lap four.[2]
The rain combined with drivers on slick tyres resulted in some rapid revisions to the order, with Wehrlin passing Auer for the lead, while Juncadella came under fire from Rast.[2] Several drivers would then make stops for wet tyres as the rain intensified, with Auer getting caught out on the wet concrete a sliding into his pitcrew.[2] Moments later and Edoardo Mortara and Bruno Spengler had identical accidents when they attempted to stop, with the race ultimately stopped as the circuit's ambulances were scrambled to the pitlane.[2]
A half-hour interruption followed, with no serious injuries reported, before the race resumed on a now drying circuit.[2] Wehrlein and Paffett would head the charge but had yet to make their stops, with Paffett peeling off to serve his stop at the end of lap twelve.[2]
Juncadella moved into the lead with a move on Wehrlein a lap later, with Müller and Jamie Green also closing in, although all four still had to make their stops.[2] That left Philipp Eng in the de facto lead of the race, although Wittmann soon usurped him with Glock following him through.[2]
Once the lead quartet had stopped the race was over, with Wittmann securing victory ahead of Glock, while Eng just kept Rockenfeller at bay to complete the podium.[2] Behind, Paul di Resta scrambled back up to salvage fifth for Mercedes ahead of Eriksson, while Spengler, Augusto Farfus, Auer and Mortara completed the scorers.[2]
After the race, however, it was announced that Spengler, Auer and Mortara were to be disqualified, as they had triggered the red flag.[2] That pushed Robin Frijns, Loïc Duval and Rast into the points instead.[2]
Background[]
Gary Paffett moved to the top of the Championship as a result of the first battle in Budapest, opening out a seven point lead over former leader Timo Glock. Yet, those two still held a fair margin over the chasing pack, with Paul di Resta leading the counter-charge on 56 points, and hence was sixteen behind Glock. Lucas Auer was next up ahead of Edoardo Mortara, who had also inched closer to the hunt, while Nico Müller's first points of the campaign meant that all eighteen drivers had scored after five rounds.
In the Teams' Championship it was Mercedes-AMG Petronas who still led the field, moving onto 118 points for the season. Sister squad Mercedes-AMG Silberpfeil had moved into second with 99 points, while BMW Team RMR had dropped to third, but were just a point behind Silberpfeil. Mercedes, meanwhile, would continue to head the Manufacturers' challenge, moving onto 278 points, with BMW and Audi having lost more ground.

Standings[]
Timo Glock had returned to the head of the Championship hunt as the weekend in Hungary came to an end, with his advantage established at a relatively healthy eleven points. Gary Paffett was his closest challenger in second having lost the initiative, while Paul di Resta had held third. Lucas Auer and Marco Wittmann completed the top five, with all eighteen drivers on the score sheet.
BMW Team RMR led the charge in the Teams' Championship after six rounds, having left Hungary on 131 points. That meant they were eleven ahead of Mercedes-AMG Petronas, the former leaders, while Mercedes-AMG Silberpfeil were still relatively close in third. Mercedes, meanwhile, would continue to dominate the precedings in the Manufacturers' Championship, leaving Hungary with 58 points in hand over BMW in second.
