The 2018 Lausitzring Race 1, otherwise known as the DTM Lausitz 2018 Race 1, was the third race of the 2018 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany on 19 May 2018.[1] The race would see Edoardo Mortara secure his first victory for Mercedes, although the race was overshadowed by a huge accident for defending Champion René Rast.[2]
Qualifying had seen an intense fight for pole position between the DTM's two Austrian drivers, with Lucas Auer of Mercedes edging out BMW's Philipp Eng by 0.007s.[3] Bruno Spengler was next up ahead of Pascal Wehrlein, while Nico Müller was the best of Audi drivers in ninth, half a second off the pace.[3]
The start of the race would see Auer block any lunges from Eng into the first corner, sweeping across the nose of the #25 BMW to seize the inside line for turn one.[2] That allowed Spengler to challenge on the outside of turn one and duly seize second, although all fighting was immediately ceased as the Safety Car was scrambled.[2]
Indeed, as those at the head of the field fought there was a huge accident behind, for an unsighted Jamie Green had nailed the back of stablemate Nico Müller, who had stalled on the grid.[2] Both Audis were totalled, with Müller being taken to the medical centre for checks, with the rest of the field having to drive through the pitlane as the start/finish straight was littered with debris.[2]
The Indy-style restart was conducted at the end of lap six, with Auer edging out Spengler on the run to turn one to retain the lead.[2] The rest of the field swept in behind them without issue, although a few moments later the race would be halted by a red flag, this time due to another wrecked Audi.[2]
Indeed, while fighting through turns two and three Rast would bounced outwide, before contact with Loïc Duval pitched the #33 Audi into a slide off circuit.[2] While the slide seemed initially innocuous, Rast's car caught a drop in the grass/kerb and was instantly tipped into a barrel roll/somersault, wrecking the car.[2] The #33 Audi crashed back down on its wheels but was destroyed, although Rast managed to escape without the intervention of the hastily scrambled marshals.[2]
After fifteen minutes the race resumed with another Indy-style restart, with Auer again fending off Spengler, while Eng gave chase.[2] The race soon settled into a tense stalemate as the drivers made their stops, sparked by Spengler and Eng, while Auer remained out until lap thirteen, while Timo Glock moved into contention with his stop on lap fourteen.[2]
Indeed, Glock initially emerged ahead of Auer and hence held the de facto lead, although Auer would quickly catch the BMW on cold tyres.[2] However, the German racer would put up a ferocious defence to keep the #22 Mercedes at bay, which almost resulted in Auer getting collected by Spengler when the Canadian misjudged his braking point into turn one while fighting Eng.[2] Indeed, Eng would benefit massively from the fighting ahead, passing all three to secure the de facto lead with time running out.[2]
Their fighting was so intense that it allowed Mortara to jump into the fray his stop, emerging between Eng and Glock.[2] The Italian duly forced his way past Eng with the aid of DRS on the penultimate lap, a move which cost Eng enough momentum that it allowed Glock to follow the #48 Mercedes through.[2]
With that the race was run, with Mortara sweeping across the line to secure victory, while Glock escaped any retaliation from Eng to claim second.[2] Behind, Auer was a frustrated fourth ahead of Spengler and Paul di Resta, while Marco Wittmann, Pascal Wehrlein, Gary Paffett and Augusto Farfus scoring the remaining points.[2]
Background[]
Timo Glock had moved to the top of the Championship after his victory, moving a point ahead of Gary Paffett, former leader. Mike Rockenfeller was next up after finishing second in the second battle of Hockenheim, while Lucas Auer and Pascal Wehrlein were level with the German on eighteen points. Elsewhere, Joel Eriksson was up to sixth after his maiden points finish, with fourteen of the field now having scored points after two rounds.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas were headlining the Teams' Championship with 61 points to their credit, holding a seventeen point lead over BMW Team RMR. Mercedes-AMG Silberpfeil had retained third ahead of Audi Team Phoenix, while Audi Team Abt Sportsline were the only pointless team in ninth. There were no changes in the Manufacturers' Championship meanwhile, with Mercedes having moved onto 103 points, 31 ahead of BMW in second.
