The 2018 Misano Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Misano 2018 Race 2, was the fourteenth race of the 2018 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Misano World Circuit in Misano Adriatico, Emilia-Romagna, Italy on 26 August 2018.[1] The race would see Joel Eriksson sweep to his maiden DTM victory, as wildcard driver Alex Zanardi claimed an impressive fifth place finish.[2]

Qualifying would see the field once again battle in wet conditions, with Loïc Duval emerging from the fight with his maiden DTM pole.[3] Edoardo Mortara would share the front row with the Frenchman, while Marco Wittmann was the best of the BMW drivers, claiming sixth on the grid.[3]

The rain had cleared long before the race, resulting in a damp circuit and a split decision of wet and slick Hankook tyres across the field.[2] Ultimately, it was those who started with wet tyres that proved to have made the best choice, although that was of little consolation for Duval, who bogged down at the start and tumbled down the field.[2]

Mortara hence led the charge into the first corner ahead of Daniel Juncadella, while a fast starting Timo Glock rocketed up to third ahead of Mike Rockenfeller.[2] Further back, Paul di Resta had also made a strong start but elbowed Robin Frijns off at turn two and received a warning, although the Dutchman would remain ahead of the Scot in sixth.[2]

Early stops saw several drivers swap their wet tyres for slicks as the circuit was rapidly drying, with di Resta the main beneficiary as he climbed up to third with moves on Frijns and Nico Müller.[2] He would then undermine his hopes of a strong finish by making his own stop for slicks, just as rain began to fall midway through lap nine.[2]

Wittmann, whom had already stopped, quickly dived back into the pits for wets, a move copied by everyone whom had switched to slicks over the following few laps.[2] That left Mortara, René Rast, Frijns and Zanardi at the head of the field, the only drivers yet to have stopped and still on their wets, and with a full lap on most of their challengers.[2]

However, a Safety Car would be called to bunch the field back up, for Lucas Auer had spun out of the race at turn eleven and got beached in the gravel.[2] A standard single-file restart followed two laps later, with Mortara sprinting away, with the lapped Duval in between him and Rast.[2]

The top four would all break clear, as behind Juncadella and Championship leader Gary Paffett clashed, sending both to the back of the field.[2] Zanardi, meanwhile, would make his stop and rejoin behind Eriksson, one of the few drivers still in the lead lap.[2] Rast was in three laps later and remained ahead of Zanardi, with Mortara and Frijns rejoining either side of the #33 Audi.[2]

All of that left Eriksson with a small lead at the head of the hunt, and one which he would hold through to the chequered flag to claim victory.[2] Mortara was next up ahead of Rast, while Frijns finished ahead of Zanardi, who was ineligible to score points.[2] di Resta was next up and claimed the Championship lead, with Duval, Jamie Green, Rockenfeller and Müller completing the scorers.[2]

Background[]

The title fight was put back into an unknown state after the first battle of Misano, as Paul di Resta demolished Gary Paffett's lead to just a single point. Indeed, the two Brits were on their own at the head of the field, with Edoardo Mortara in third a full 58 points behind the lead duo. Behind, Marco Wittmann had slipped to fourth on 112 points, Lucas Auer had dropped to fifth, while Robin Frijns had gained three positions at the back of the field.

In the Teams' Championship Mercedes-AMG Petronas had held their initiative in the title hunt, although their advantage had been reduced to 36 points. Mercedes-AMG Remus had done the most damage, jumping into second with 233 points, while sister squad Mercedes-AMG Silberpfeil had slipped to third on 228. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, Mercedes were set to bow out of the DTM as the Champions, having ended Saturday's running with 730 points to their credit.
