2018 Zandvoort Race 1 | 2018 Brands Hatch Race 1 |
The 2018 Zandvoort Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Zandvoort 2018 Race 2, was the tenth race of the 2018 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in Zandvoort, North Holland, Netherlands on 15 July 2018.[1] The race, which marked the halfway point in the 2018 season, would see René Rast secure his and Audi's first win of the campaign, after gambling on his strategy.[2]
Qualifying would see Championship leader Gary Paffett charge to pole position, beating closest challenger Philipp Eng by 0.446s.[3] Rast was next up in third to put all three manufacturers on the front two rows, with Pascal Wehrlein next up in fourth.[3]
The start of the race would see Paffett instantly dart into the lead of the race, while Eng maintained second ahead of Rast.[2] Rast himself was fortunate to hold onto third after coming under fire from Wehrlein behind, while the rest of the field dive into Tarzan without issue.[2]
Rast made his gamble at the end of the opening tour, completely reversing his strategy from Saturday by stopping at the end of the opening tour.[2] In clear air the German racer quickly began matching Paffett's pace out front, while Wehrlein and Paul di Resta began to fight with Eng for second.[2]
Jamie Green and Mike Rockenfeller would also be early pit callers, stopping on lap four, while di Resta abandoned fourth due to the slow pace of Eng.[2] They would all rejoin behind Rast, with Eng subsequently slipping behind all of them after his stop a lap later.[2]
Paffett's stop came on lap ten, although a slower stop for the Brit would allow Rast to sweep past the #2 Mercedes as it exited the pits to claim the de facto race lead.[2] The rest of the stops, including one for race leader Wehrlein, would then put them back at the head of the pack on lap nineteen, although the German would get penalised for contact with Marco Wittmann when he rejoined that caused the #11 BMW to pick up a puncture.[2]
The Safety Car was then scrambled on lap 21, as Bruno Spengler was spun into the gravel by Green, who had been stuck behind the #7 BMW since he stopped.[2] The race resumed with an IndyCar style restart three laps later, with Rast sweeping into the lead ahead of Paffett, despite the Brit's attempts to run around the outside of the #33 Audi through Tarzan.[2]
That, ultimately, proved to be that for the race, with Rast able to keep Paffett at arm's length to secure victory, the safety car having enabled Rast to preserve his tyres.[2] di Resta was next up having refused to attack Paffett, while Eng recovered to fourth ahead of Augusto Farfus.[2] Wehrlein was next up ahead of Nico Müller and Edoardo Mortara, while Lucas Auer and Timo Glock completed the scorers.[2]
Background[]
Gary Paffett had enhanced his grip on the Championship lead after the opening race in Zandvoort, moving onto 127 points for the season. Behind, his closest challenger was now Paul di Resta, climbing from fifth to second on 106 points, while Timo Glock had moved into third on 100. Marco Wittmann was next up having slipped to fourth, Edoardo Mortara had tumbled to fifth, while Pascal Wehrlein and Philipp Eng swapped places in seventh and eighth.
In the Teams' Championship Mercedes-AMG Petronas had filtered back to the top of the pack after the first race of the weekend, claiming their 184 point of the season. Sister squad Mercedes-AMG Silberpfeil were next up in second, having slipped four behind, while BMW Team RMR had lost ground in third on 153. In the Manufacturers' Championship it was Mercedes whom had taken the most out of the first battle of Zandvoort, heading into the Sunday race with 497 points.
