The DTM Assen 2019 Race 2, otherwise known as the 2019 Assen Race 2, was the tenth round of the 2019 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, held at the TT Circuit Assen in Assen, Drenthe, Netherlands, on 21 July 2019.[1] The race would see Mike Rockenfeller secure his first win since 2017, as Marco Wittmann stormed from the back of the grid to claim second.[2]
Indeed, Wittmann had been the victim of an engine issue in qualifying, which resulted in the German racer failing to set a competitive time.[3] At the head of the field, meanwhile, René Rast would secure pole position ahead of Jonathan Aberdein, while Rockenfeller beat Nico Müller to fourth.[3]
The start of the race would see Rast sprint into an early lead, while Rockenfeller and Müller swept past Aberdein, who slipped down to eighth.[2] At the back, meanwhile, Wittmann would start the race from the back after opting against the pitlane, and would quickly manage to batter his way past three of the Aston Martins at the back of the pack.[2]
Wittmann made further ground in the opening laps, with the #11 BMW carving its way up to twelfth by the end of lap two.[2] A move on Daniel Juncadella on lap four would then carry Wittmann into the top ten, before moves on stablemates Philipp Eng and Sheldon van der Linde moved him up to eighth.[2]
Aberdein was Wittmann's next victim as the first drivers made their stops, making his on lap 13 with Müller the first of the leaders to stop from third a lap later.[2] However, a slow stop for the Swiss racer meant he dropped behind the German racer, as Rast and Robin Frijns slipped in for their stops.[2]
Those two rejoined just ahead of Wittmann, although the #11 BMW subsequently went on the attack, pouncing on the #4 Audi as Frijns tried desperately to warm his tyres.[2] Rast, meanwhile, would use that battle to his advantage and get his tyres up to temperature, although Wittmann was glued to his tail from that moment on.[2]
As their fight developed Rockenfeller was nursing his original tyres out front, before serving his stop and rejoining in third behind both Rast and Wittmann.[2] He duly dived past Wittmann before catching Rast by almost two seconds a lap, with the #33 Audi's pace collapsing to prompt Audi Team Rosberg to call in their lead driver for a second time.[2]
With that Rockenfeller was away, escaping to build a four second lead over Wittmann to secure victory, the latter having been instructed to nurse his tyres after Rast's tumble.[2] Müller would complete the podium ahead of Aberdein, while Rast rallied back from fourteenth after his second stop to claim fifth ahead of Frijns.[2] Juncadella was next up ahead of fellow Aston racer Paul di Resta, while Jamie Green and Pietro Fittipaldi completed the scorers.[2]
Background[]
René Rast maintained the initiative in the Championship hunt, hitting the midpoint in the season with 145 points to his credit. Nico Müller was his closest challenger in second, 23 points behind, while Philipp Eng was the third pretender in third on 111 points. Marco Wittmann would enter the second half of the season facing a 45 point deficit to the leader, while Bruno Spengler was a distant fifth on 77.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Rosberg would head into the second half of the season with the lead, holding 204 points after nine rounds. Second place was occupied by Audi Team Abt, with a point between themselves and third placed BMW Team RMG. In the Brands' Championship, meanwhile, Audi had a commanding lead of 120 points over BMW in second, while Aston Martin were a distant third on 27.
