2019 Assen Race 2 | 2019 Brands Hatch Race 2 |
The 2019 Brands Hatch Race 1, otherwise formally known as the DTM Brands Hatch 2019 Race 1, was the eleventh round of the 2019 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, held at Brands Hatch in West Kingsdown, Kent, UK, on 10 August 2019.[1] The race would see Marco Wittmann collect his fourth win of the season, in a race dictated by tyre degradation.[2]
Wittmann would claim pole position during qualifying, in a session that saw Pietro Fittipaldi crash heavily enough that he was ruled out from competing in the race.[3] Indeed, the Brazilian's accident at Paddock Hill Bend would trigger a red flag, which set-up a fifteen minute battle for pole, won by Wittmann ahead of Championship leader René Rast.[3]
After rain had effected both practice and qualifying the field would head into an unknown for the race, as the track had dried out completely as the field lined up on the grid.[2] That meant that everyone would race without knowing how the tyre wear would evolve during the race, although that would be of little concern for Joel Eriksson who was stuck in his garage with an engine issue.[2]
Eriksson ultimately failed to start at all as his BMW failed to fix the issue, as fellow BMW pilot Wittmann seemed to have taken the lead from pole.[2] However, the German racer was completely blindsided by a charging Paul di Resta, with #3 Aston Martin leaping from fourth to first on the run through Paddock Hill Bend.[2]
Behind, Jake Dennis had made a strong start in the sister Aston, although his race was hampered by a smack from Timo Glock that broke his rear wing.[2] Glock, however, would escape punishment as it was later confirmed that he had been pushed into Dennis' car, ironically by the #23 Aston Martin of Daniel Juncadella.[2]
Aston Martin's day was to go from bad to worse as di Resta, putting up an excellent defence of the lead from Wittmann, was slapped with a five second time penalty for jumping the start.[2] He would serve that penalty during his stop and drop out of the fight for the lead, as Wittmann became the first of the leaders to stop on lap sixteen.[2]
Wittmann would subsequently emerge at the head of the field once the stops were completed, with Rast having to first fight past Jamie Green and early stopper Nico Müller.[2] Yet, with younger tyres Rast would steadily close in on Wittmann out front, with the #33 Audi moving into striking distance with a handful of laps to go.[2]
Yet, Rast's only real shot came on the final tour, with the German racer trying a lunge at Druids, only for that to be repulsed.[2] He subsequently tried again around the Grand Prix loop but failed, although with DRS and Push-to-Pass Rast still had a chance through the sweeping final sector.[2]
Wittmann would, however, have enough in hand, just keeping the Audi in his wake as he flashed across the finish line to secure victory ahead of the Championship leader.[2] Müller, meanwhile, would finish a distant third ahead of Robin Frijns, with Loïc Duval and Philipp Eng fighting to the line for fifth.[2] Mike Rockenfeller was next up ahead of Sheldon van der Linde, Jonathan Aberdein and Juncadella, as a furious di Resta finished in fourteenth, three laps behind.[2]
Background[]
René Rast saw his lead increase to 22 points as the Assen weekend came to a conclusion, holding 158 points with eight rounds to go. Nico Müller was next up in second on 136, while Marco Wittmann had climbed to third, a further eighteen behind. Philipp Eng had therefore slipped to fourth on 111 points, while race winner Mike Rockenfeller was up to fifth on 94 points.
Audi Team Rosberg ended the trip to Assen with 219 points to their name, leaving them eighteen ahead of stablemates Audi Team Abt. BMW Team RMG were next up in third ahead of Audi Team Phoenix, while the two Aston Martin backed teams were found in eight and ninth, almost 200 points off the lead. It was a similar story for the British marque in the Brands' Championship, with Aston in a solid third on 45 points, as Audi led the charge from BMW with 576 points to 406.

Standings[]
The Drivers Championship had remained unchanged as a result of the opening battle of Brands Hatch, with René Rast had extended his lead to 27 points at the head of the field. Nico Müller had remained his closest challenger, while Marco Wittmann had closed up to within five points of the Swiss racer in third. Philipp Eng was next up ahead of Mike Rockenfeller in fifth, the last driver above 100 points for the campaign.
In the Teams Championship it was a similar story, with no changes to the order although gaps had been modified. Audi Team Rosberg were the leaders on 239 points, eleven ahead of second placed Audi Team Abt, while BMW Team RMG were sat in third a further five behind. Elsewhere, Audi had once again enhanced their commanding lead in the Brands Championship, moving onto 634 points having claimed almost all of the points in the first Brands Hatch race.
