Season Guide
2018 2020

The 2019 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, abbreviated to the 2019 DTM Season, was the twentieth edition of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters since its re-creation in 2000, organised by the DMSB.[1] 2019 was a significant year in the DTM's history, with a new manufacturer joining the series, and the series' familiar V8s replaced by Straight 4 turbocharged engines as the DTM switched to the new Class One regulation rulebook.[2][3]

Gary Paffett would start the season as the reigning DTM Champion, although he would not defend his crown after taking up a seat in Formula E.[4] Likewise, Mercedes and HWA Team would start 2019 as the Champions in the manufacturers and teams Championships, although the former would not compete in 2019 having ended their DTM programme at the end of 2018.[5]

In place of the three pointed star would come British sportscar manufacturer Aston Martin, becoming the first non-German manufacturer to enter the "new" DTM since its creation.[6] Audi and BMW, meanwhile, would continue to race in the DTM, with the former also supplying an additional customer team in the form of Team WRT.[7]

The season would open with a victory for Marco Wittmann and BMW in the 2019 Hockenheim Opening Race 1, with the German racer winning from pole position, before René Rast claimed victory in the Second Race.[8] Philipp Eng then scored victory in the 2019 Zolder Race 1, before Rast and then Wittmann collected their second victories at the following two rounds.[9]

Nico Müller was the next driver to claim a race victory, before Rast collected his third win of the campaign at the 2019 Norisring Race 1, leaving him in command of the Championship.[10] Bruno Spengler then claimed a race victory, before Wittmann claimed two wins in the next three rounds, but remained behind Rast.[11]

Indeed, Rast would run virtually unopposed for the rest of the season, with victories at Brands Hatch, Lausitzring and the 2019 Nürburgring Race 1 leaving him as the Champion with three races to spare.[12] Rast would win his seventh race of the season at the season finale in Hockenheim, and hence ended the season on 322 points, 72 ahead of Müller in second.[13]

The season would see several drivers make their DTM debuts, with Sheldon van der Linde and Jonathan Aberdein becoming the first South African drivers to compete in the revived DTM.[14] Jake Dennis and Ferdinand von Habsburg would also make their DTM debuts with Aston Martin, while Pietro Fittipaldi also served as a rookie with Audi.[15] The season would also see MotoGP rider Andrea Dovizioso make his debut at his home race in Misano.[16]

Background[]

Calendar[]

The 2019 DTM Championship would see a revised calendar and support programme organised for the DTM field, featuring eighteen races across nine rounds.[1] Unsurprisingly the Hockenheimring would open and close the season, with races in May and October, while Circuit Park Zolder would host the second pair of races in mid-May, returning to the DTM for the first time since 1994.[1] Misano would host the third round of the season, although the start times had been moved so that they were held in daylight, before the field headed to the Norisring for the annual battle on the streets.[17][1]

A new venue to the DTM would then host the fifth round of the season, with the series heading to the TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands on the 20/21 July.[1] A return to Brands Hatch in the UK followed in mid-August, before the Lausitzring returned later in the month, having hosted the pre-season test in April.[1] The annual visit to the Nürburgring would come in mid-September, before the season came to its conclusion in Hockenheim on the 6 October.[1]

Technical[]

The DTM would introduce major changes to the rulebook for the 2019 season, with the series introducing a "Push-to-Pass" system for the season.[31] The system would increase each car's power by 30hp when activated, and would be able to be used twelve times per race.[31]

Sporting[]

There were no changes made to the scoring system ahead of the 2019 season, with the top ten in the race registering points according the the FIA's standard system, while the top three in qualifying received additional points.[32] The mandatory pit stop rule was also retained for 2019, while Free Practice was moved exclusively to Fridays to limit the amount of running on race weekends.[17] Races were still time limited to 55 minutes plus one lap, while the DTM also continued to use standing starts.[32]

The full points scoring system for the 2019 DTM campaign is outlined below:
