2019 Lausitzring Race 1 | 2019 Nürburgring Race 1 |
The 2019 Lausitzring Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Lausitz 2019 Race 2, was the fourteenth round of the 2019 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, held at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany, on 25 August 2019.[1] The race, which was the 500th in the combined history of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and the modern DTM, would see René Rast claim victory as Audi claimed the Brands' Championship.[2][3]
Qualifying had seen Jamie Green secure pole position for the Ingolstadt based marque, with Jonathan Aberdein claiming second.[4] Title pretenders Nico Müller and Rast would then share the second row, while Marco Wittmann was the lone BMW in a top-eight dominated by Audi, having secured sixth.[4]
The start of the race would see Green sprint into an early lead, while Rast swept up from fourth to secure second, as Aberdein made a poor getaway.[3] However, it was Müller's start that was the most dramatic, as the Swiss title pretender slumped from third to tenth having narrowly avoided stalling.[3]
The race soon settled into a procession after that, with Green initially pulling clear from Rast, before allowing his teammate through at the start of lap four.[3] Behind, Robin Frijns would establish himself in third ahead of Mike Rockenfeller, while Philipp Eng moved into the top ten, and would challenge Müller for ninth.[3]
Müller then opted to make an early stop after getting mired at the back of the top ten, hoping to undercut those ahead at the expense of having to nurse his Hankook tyres later in the race.[3] Fortunately for him he would come out in clear air off the back of the pack, and subsequently strung together a handful of quick laps.[3]
Unsurprisingly Müller's pace prompted a steady stream of stops from the rest of the front runners, with Frijns emerging just ahead of the Swiss racer.[3] However, the Dutchman's cold tyres would allow Müller to pounce upon him for a de jure third place in the race without too much resistance, before Rast stopped and just managed to keep ahead.[3]
Green, meanwhile, would gamble on a long first stint, although he emerged behind Frijns, who had also slipped behind Rockenfeller on cool tyres.[3] Elsewhere, Wittmann led the anti-Audi crusade in seventh, although would eventually manage to wrestle sixth from Aberdein, while Paul di Resta was the lead Aston Martin in tenth.[3]
That was, until the Scot was clattered into by Bruno Spengler, whose lunge at turn nine would send the #3 Aston skating onto the grass with broken suspension.[3] di Resta subsequently retired as Spengler dropped to fourteenth, joining Ferdinand von Habsburg and Jake Dennis on the sidelines.[3]
With that the race was run, with Rast keeping Müller at bay by five seconds to claim victory, leaving him with a 20 point advantage with four races to go.[3] Rockenfeller completed the podium in third ahead of Green, who made a late move stick on Frijns for fourth, while Wittmann completed the top six.[3] Aberdein was on the #11 BMW's tail to secure seventh ahead of Loïc Duval, with Pietro Fittipaldi and Eng claiming the remaining points.[3]
Background[]
René Rast had held onto his lead despite retiring, although his advantage had been demolished to just fourteen points. Race winner Nico Müller had been the man to do the damage, moving onto 195 points, while Marco Wittmann had maintained his slim hopes, moving to within 60 of the leader. Fourth, meanwhile, would be occupied by Philipp Eng on 139 points, while Mike Rockenfeller completed the stretched top five on 123.
In the Teams' Championship there would be a change atop the pile after the first battle of Lausitz, with Audi Team Abt emerging at the head of the pack on 306 points. They hence relegated Audi Team Rosberg to second, with the German squad slipping 33 points behind, while BMW Team RMG held third on 225. Audi meanwhile, led the charge in the Brands' Championship on 782 points, and could win the title with a strong result in the Second Race of the weekend.

Milestones[]
- Audi declared as the 2019 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship for Manufacturers/Brands Champions.
- 500th race to be staged as part of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters.[2]
- Fifteenth victory for René Rast.
Standings[]
Victory moved René Rast twenty points clear in the Championship with four rounds to go, meaning he could feasibly secure the title at the Nürburgring. He had moved twenty points clear of Nico Müller in second, with the Swiss racer himself able to guarantee second in the Eifel Mountains ahead of Marco Wittmann. Wittmann, meanwhile, would have to outscore Rast by twelve points across the Nürburgring weekend to remain in the hunt, while Philipp Eng and Mike Rockenfeller were almost certainly out of the fight in fourth and fifth.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Abt led the charge with 335 points, 25 ahead of sister team Audi Team Rosberg in second. BMW Team RMG were next up in third, 89 off the lead, while Audi Team Phoenix were still in the hunt for the crown in fourth. The Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, was over, with Audi declared Champions ahead of BMW, while Aston Martin were set to finish in third.
