The 2019 Norisring Race 2, formally known as the DTM Nuremburg 2019 Race 2, was the eighth race of the 2019 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, held at the Norisring in Nuremburg, Bavaria, Germany, on 7 July 2019.[1] The race would see Bruno Spengler collect a record fifth Norisring victory ahead of Jamie Green, the Canadian's first since 2017.[2]

Qualifying had seen René Rast sweep to pole position, narrowly beating both Green and Nico Müller by 0.007s, one of the narrowest margins in DTM history.[3] Green would, however, receive a grid penalty for a red flag infringement, committed during the session after Timo Glock stopped at turn six.[3][4]

The start of the race saw Rast make another poor start, albeit this time without stalling, and hence allowed Müller and Loïc Duval to sweep ahead into turn one.[2] However, Rast retaliated and lunged at the pair of them into the first corner and, with all three Audis occupied, inadvertently gifted the lead to Spengler's #7 BMW.[2]

Moments later and Rast's race was to take a nose-dive, as contact with Müller resulted in the German racer spinning to the back of the field at the Schöller S.[2] Rast duly rejoined over a third of a lap behind the leaders, with several drivers opting to stop at the end of the opening tour.[2]

Green was the man to watch in the early stages, barging his way past Philipp Eng for second, before being ordered to return the position.[2] That ultimately allowed Robin Frijns to pass the Brit a few laps later, as Duval made an early stop for fresh tyres with Rast, while Müller served a penalty for spinning the #33 Audi.[2]

The race settled down after that, with even a rain shower on lap 27 causing little impact to the proceedings.[2] Spengler and Eng duly ran in first and second throughout the opening stages, with the duo pitting on lap 32 and remaining on slicks, reacting to a stop from Green.[2]

Green duly jumped Frijns and Eng at the stops to secure second, and duly harassed Spengler until the Canadian racer got his tyres warmed up.[2] Once they were warm, however, the #7 BMW was visibly able to pull away from the #53 Audi, as behind Eng was swarmed by Frijns and Mike Rockenfeller.[2]

The closing stages would be all about Rockenfeller, who engaged Frijns in a duel for third which he would win a handful of laps from the end.[2] The German then went charging off after Green, leaving Frijns in a lonely fourth, as behind Marco Wittmann ground to a halt with an engine issue.[2]

With that the race was over, with Spengler cruising through the closing stages to secure a record fifth win at the Norisring, and his first since the opening race at the venue in 2017.[2] Behind, Green kept Rockenfeller at bay to secure second, while Frijns finished a lonely fourth ahead of Eng.[2] Duval was next up ahead of the recovering Rast, with Müller, Timo Glock and Daniel Juncadella.[2]

Background[]

René Rast extended his Championship lead as a result of the opening race in Nuremburg, heading into the Sunday battle with a 22 point lead. Nico Müller was now his closest challenger in second, while Philipp Eng had slipped to third, 30 behind the German racer. Marco Wittmann was next up in fourth ahead of Bruno Spengler, while Paul di Resta had remained as the highest placed of the Aston Martin drivers in fifteenth.

In the Teams' Championship it was Audi Team Rosberg that continued to lead the charge, holding 154 points halfway though the weekend at the Norisring. Next up were Audi Team Abt had retained second ahead of BMW Team RMG, while R-Motorsport I were a distant seventh as the best Aston equipped team. In the Brands' Championship, meanwhile, Audi had moved onto 399 points, leaving them 99 ahead of BMW, while Aston Martin held just 26 points.
