2019 Zolder Race 1 | 2019 Misano Race 1 |
The 2019 Zolder Race 2, otherwise known formally as the DTM Zolder 2019 Race 2, was the fourth race of the 2019 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, held at the Circuit Zolder in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium, on 19 May 2019.[1] The race would see René Rast secure victory ahead of Philipp Eng, as a mid-race Safety Car dictated the outcome of the race.[2]
Qualifying had seen Sheldon van der Linde secure his maiden DTM pole position, defeating Rast by an incredibly small margin of 0.006s.[3] They had emerged from a six minute sprint to claim top spot, after an electrical failure for Paul di Resta, which would rule him out of the race, caused a red flag.[3]
The start of the race saw van der Linde manage to sprint into an early lead, leaving Rast to fend off the attentions of Philipp Eng.[2] Eng gained the initiative but ran wide at the first corner, resulting in Rast, Timo Glock and Robin Frijns sweeping past.[2]
The race would quickly settle into a steady tempo, however, as van der Linde fended off the attentions of Rast, while Glock and Frijns remained on their tail.[2] The order would remain stable behind them too, with Eng trying to make up for his off track excursion.[2]
Eng duly decided to pit on lap eight, joined by Pietro Fittipaldi and Nico Müller, while Frijns and Glock stopped a lap later, but rejoined behind Eng.[2] Frijns then muscled his way back past, while Rast barged past van der Linde for the lead on lap eleven before easing into a lead.[2]
van der Line and Rast then made their stops along with Marco Wittmann, who shot up to fifth behind Frijns after the leaders had all stopped.[2] However, a lunge on the Dutchman at turn one resulted in Frijns getting spun into the barriers on lap 22, resulting in the Safety Car being scrambled.[2]
Those that had not served their mandatory stop duly did son, while several drivers opted to take on their second fresh set before the restart.[2] Rast duly aced the restart to secure the lead, while Eng got a run on van der Linde through the first corner to squeeze through to claim second.[2]
The closing stages would see Rast ease into a fair lead ahead of Eng, while van der Linde came under huge pressure from those behind.[2] Indeed, Mike Rockenfeller would throw everything he had at the South African racer, although Jamie Green would ultimately take both drivers with a lunge at the final chicane.[2]
With that the race was run, with Rast cruising through to claim victory ahead of Eng, a result which moved the Austrian racer into the Championship lead ahead of the German ace.[2] Green, meanwhile, kept a charging Rockenfeller at bay to secure third, while van der Linde remained on their tail to secure fifth.[2] Jake Dennis was next up as the best of the Aston Martin pilots ahead of Bruno Spengler, Müller, Fittipaldi and Joel Eriksson.[2]
Background[]
Marco Wittmann had retained his lead at the head of the hunt after the third race of the season, which remained at a tenuous three points. Philipp Eng had been the big winner in the opening race at Zolder, leaping into second after his maiden victory. Nico Müller had also made group as he climbed to third ahead of Robin Frijns, while Mike Rockenfeller retained his top five status in fifth.
In the Teams' Championship there had been no changes to the order, with Team Abt retaining their slim lead over BMW Team RMG at the head of the hunt. BMW Team RMR were next, a point behind RMG, while Team Phoenix and Team Rosberg completed the top five. Likewise, there was no change in the Brands' Championship, with Audi still leading from BMW and Aston Martin.
