The 2020 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, otherwise known as the 2020 DTM Season, will be the twenty-first edition of the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, and the thirty-fourth season of German Touring Car Racing.[1] The season would see Audi and BMW do battle, after the Aston Martin programme was cancelled.[2]
René Rast would start the season as the defending Champion, while Audi Sport Team Rosberg and Audi opened the season as the reigning Teams' and Brands' Champions.[3] There would, however, be some changes to the regulations, with a move to a new fuel blend by suppliers Aral AG, an increase in Push-to-Pass boost power, and unrestricted use of DRS.[4]
An initial calendar of ten rounds and twenty races was announced in September 2019, with races at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, Italy, Anderstorp Raceway in Sweden, and Igora Drive, Russia.[5] Their addition resulted in the removal of one of the races at the Hockenheimring, as well as the removal of the Misano World Circuit from the calendar.[5]
However, the DTM would be heavily impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic, resulting in a heavily revised calendar being published on 26 March 2020.[1] The start of the season was initially delayed to the 11 July 2020 at the Norisring, and was set to conclude on 15 November in Autodromo Nazionale Monza.[1] This was later revised on 3 and then 6 June 2020, with the season officially starting on 1 August at Spa-Francorchamps, before concluding at Hockenheim on 8 November.[6]
The series would also receive another blow in April 2020, as Audi announced that they would withdraw from the DTM at the end of the season.[7]
Background[]
Calendar[]
The provisional calendar for the 2020 DTM Championship was announced on 19 September 2019, and would feature some heavy revisions to the previous 2019 schedule.[5] Indeed, there would be three changes of venue, with rounds in Russia and Sweden added to the calendar, while the Hockenheimring would only host one race.[5] Furthermore, the Misano World Circuit would be replaced by the legendary Autodromo Nazionale Monza, as the series shifted to a 40/60 split between rounds in Germany and the rest of Europe.[5]
Primary Plans[]
The initial calendar for the 2020 campaign saw the season start in Zolder, Belgium, on 24 - 26 April, the first time in the Series' history that the season had started away from the Hockenheimring.[5] The Lausitzring would then host the second round on 15-16 May, before the series headed to Russia to open the new Igora Drive race circuit near Saint Petersburg on 29 - 31 May.[8] Another new venue for the DTM would follow on 12 - 14 June, with the Series heading to the Anderstorp Raceway in Sweden for the firs time.[5]
The following round would see the series head to the Autodromo Nazionale Monza for the first time on the 26 - 28 June.[5] The annual trip to Nuremberg and the Norisring then followed on 10 - 12 July, prior to the summer break which would last through the rest of July and into August.[5] The season would then restart with a trip to Brands Hatch on 22 - 23 August, using the full Grand Prix layout once again.[5]
Assen was to follow on the 4 - 6 September, before the DTM headed to the Eifel Mountains and the Nürburgring for its annual battle around the GP-Strecke on 11 - 13 September.[5] The series would then conclude on home turf at the Hockenheimring on 2 - 4 October 2020, with ten rounds and twenty races to decide the Championship.[5]
COVID Contractions[]
After the outbreak of the COVID-19 Pandemic and its global impact, the DTM were forced to heavily revise their original calendar, releasing a revised schedule on 26 March 2020.[1] No circuits or rounds were added or removed, although there were sweeping changes to the schedule, with the series compressed to a five month run between July and November.[1] The season would hence start on 11 July with the race at the Norisring, before heading to either Anderstorp or Igora Drive, depending on later confirmation.[1]
Zolder was to then hold its race on 7 - 9 August, followed by Brands Hatch on 22 - 23 August and Assen on the 2 - 4 September.[1] The Nürburgring also had its dates unchanged as it moved to serve as the sixth round of the season, followed by either Anderstorp or Igora Drive on 2 - 4 October.[1] The Lausitzring moved to the 16 - 18 October, Hockenheim would host its races on the 7 - 8 November, while Monza would host the season finale on 13 - 15 November.[1]
Second Revision[]
Another revised calendar for the 2020 season was released on 3 June 2020, which saw the removal of almost all of the international races due to quarantine rules.[6] The season was still set to open on the 11 July at the Norisring, before the Series was to return to the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on 1 August.[6] Two weeks later the Series would head to the Lausitzring, which would host two race weekends in succession on 14-16 and 21-23 August.[6]
Assen would then host its DTM races on 5/6 September, before the Championship returned to the Nürburgring to use the Grand Prix Strecke for the first time since 2001.[6] A second battle around the Nürburgring's Sprint Circuit would follow a week later, before a trip to Zolder in Belgium on 9 - 11 October.[6] Likewise, the Circuit Zolder would host a second set of races on 16 - 18 October, before the series came to a conclusion on 6 - 8 November at the Hockenheimring.[6]
On 5 June the City of Nuremberg council voted to deny permission for the Norisring Speedweekend to be staged, resulting in the cancellation of the Norisring meeting.[9] The season would hence officially start on 1 August at Spa-Francorchamps, with no event added to replace the trip to Nuremberg.[9]

There were no changes made to the scoring system ahead of the 2020 season, with the top ten in the race registering points according the the FIA's standard system, while the top three in qualifying received additional points.[24] The mandatory pit stop rule was also retained for 2020, while Free Practice was moved exclusively to Fridays to limit the amount of running on race weekends.[25] Races were still time limited to 55 minutes plus one lap, while the DTM also continued to use standing starts.[24]
