2020 Hockenheim Race 1 | 2021 Monza Race 1 |
The 2020 Hockenheim Race 2, otherwise known as the 2020 DTM Hockenheim Race 2, was the eighteenth and final race of the 2020 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Hockenheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany on 8 November 2020.[1] The race would see René Rast and Nico Müller duel for the Championship title, with the German ace holding a thirteen point lead ahead of what would be the last race of the Class One era.[2]
Ahead of the final race Rast would extend his advantage by three points by claiming pole position in qualifying, with Müller unable to secure a bonus point after he claimed fourth on the grid.[3] Mike Rockenfeller and Jamie Green would split the two title protagonists on the grid, while Jonathan Aberdein was the best BMW pilot on the grid in fifth, and one of only two in the top ten.[3]
The start of the race saw Rockenfeller make the best start, surging past Rast to claim the lead as the Champion elect opted against making a point of a fight for the lead into the first corner.[2] Rast hence settled into second behind the sister #99 Audi, while behind Müller dived past Green into turn one to move up to third.[2]
The early laps saw Müller do his best to force a move on Rast, only for the German veteran to gain some breathing room by lunging past Rockenfeller to secure the lead on lap three.[2] With that the race became something of a procession, with Rast maintaining a small lead over Rockenfeller, while Rockenfeller kept Müller at bay without issue.[2]
In a bid to snatch victory Müller made an early stop on lap fourteen, and would duly begin lapping faster than the #33 Audi after an expectedly slow out-lap on cold tyres.[2] When Rast stopped a few laps later the ploy appeared to have worked as Müller shuffled into the de facto lead, although with Rast still in second his title hopes were effectively over.[2]
Furthermore Rast would have far stronger pace than Müller on his second set of tyres, and would steadily reel in the #51 Audi as the race wore on.[2] Indeed, the inevitable move for the lead would come long before the final throes of the race, with Rast quickly escaping from his main title rival at a rate of a second a lap.[2]
With that attention focused on the fight for third, with Rockenfeller, Green and Robin Frijns all fighting for the position until the closing stages.[2] Ultimately, that battle would be won by Green as the #53 Audi simultaneously fended off Frijns and attacked Rockenfeller, with the #99 Audi soon left to fend off the attentions of the sister #4 car.[2]
Out front, meanwhile, Rast would secure his seventh victory of the season at a canter to claim his third DTM title, with Müller finishing as runner up in both the race and the title hunt.[2] Green then completed the podium ahead of Rockenfeller and Frijns, while Loïc Duval had a relatively quiet run to sixth ahead of Jonathan Aberdein.[2] Timo Glock then led Sheldon van der Linde across the line, while Philipp Eng rounded out the scorers in tenth.[2]
Background[]
For the final race of the campaign there would be no changes to either the Hockenheimring or the entry list, with all sixteen drivers set to start the final race.[1] Indeed, the final race of the 2020 season would also be the last of an entire era of the DTM, with the Class One ruleset phased out, and manufacturer backed teams set to be replaced by customer teams using Group GT3 cars for 2021.[1]
Thirteen Reasons[]
With one race to go the DTM Championship was still alive, with the top two drivers in the field separated by thirteen points ahead of the season finale. René Rast was the man to beat, and would win the title regardless if he finished ahead of Nico Müller, or finished on the podium regardless of what the Swiss racer could do. Müller, meanwhile, would need to finish in the top four to stand any hope of taking the title, with bonus points for qualifying altering other permutations.
In the Teams' Championship there had been little change at the head of the field, with Audi Team Abt having enhanced their tally to 580 points. Audi Team Rosberg were next up on 407, while in the fight for third Audi Team Phoenix had moved back ahead of BMW Team RMG. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, Audi had moved onto 1,177 for the campaign, compared the BMW's 487.
