The 2020 Lausitz Race 1, otherwise known as the 2020 DTM Lausitz Race 1, was the third race of the 2020 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship staged on the sprint version of the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany, on 15 August 2020.[1] The race would see Nico Müller sweep to his third victory of the campaign, as Sheldon van der Linde broke the Audi monopoly of the podium.[2]
Qualifying would, however, be another all Ingolstadt affair, with Robin Frijns sweeping to pole position ahead of ABT Sportsline teammate Müller by a tenth of a second.[3] Behind, Loïc Duval would complete the top three ahead of van der Linde, while Timo Glock and Marco Wittmann would share the third row for BMW.[3]
Intriguingly at the start of the race it would be those drivers on the even side of the grid who got the better launches, with Müller jumping Frijns while van der Linde jumped Duval.[2] Behind the rest of the field would getaway without issue, with the usual field compression in the first corner only resulting in some minor rubbing.[2]
The top three would break away during the opening stages, with Müller, Frijns and van der Linde easing clear of Duval without issue.[2] However, that gap would eventually stall at around five seconds before Frijns and van der Linde began attacking Müller for the lead, although the Swiss ace would resist their pressure and hold the lead.[2]
Furthermore as the race reached its middle phase Müller's lead would slowly increase, with the #51 Audi eventually securing a 1.5 second load over Frijns.[2] That gap prompted van der Linde to stop on lap fourteen, although he would still lose out to Frijns and Duval, who had caught back onto the lead group, when they stopped on the following tour.[2]
Fortunately for van der Linde he would quickly move ahead of both Frijns and Duval on their out-laps, their cold tyres taking too long to warm up around the sprint version of the Lausitzring.[2] Müller, meanwhile, would remain out until lap 20, and would subsequently rejoin in the lead of the race with a six second margin over van der Linde.[2]
The final part of the race saw van der Linde steadily close onto Müller's tail, although as he moved to within striking distance the tyres on the #31 BMW would fade, allowing Müller to escape once more.[2] The Swiss ace duly claimed victory ahead of the South African racer by 2.8 seconds when the chequered flag flew, with Frijns resisting the late attentions of Wittmann to complete the podium.[2] They were chased across the line by Timo Glock, Ferdinand von Habsburg, René Rast, Jamie Green and Philipp Eng, while Mike Rockenfeller rounded out the scorers in tenth.[2]
Background[]
For the second round of the hastily arranged and condensed 2020 DTM season the field would head to the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany for the first of two full rounds at the Eurospeedway.[1] The first of those two events would be held on the Sprint Circuit at the Lausitzring, which had last been used to stage a DTM race in 2017.[1] The circuit itself was unchanged since the last DTM race, with the field similarly unaltered since the race in Spa two weeks earlier.[1]
Spa Sensations[]
Nico Müller would end the opening weekend of the season just three points off of a maximum score, the Swiss racer having claimed 53 points with two wins. Jamie Green was his closest challenger in second, already 23 off the lead, with René Rast having opened his title campaign in third a point behind his teammate. Robin Frijns, Mike Rockenfeller and Loïc Duval then made it an all-Audi top six, with Lucas Auer the best BMW pilot in seventh.
In the Teams' Championship Audi Team Abt would end the opening weekend with an impressive tally of 78 points, after their one-two in the second race at Spa. Audi Team Rosberg were next up ahead of Audi Team Phoenix, while BMW Team RBM occupied fourth, 62 off the early leaders. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, Audi were already in complete control, 118 points ahead of BMW.

- 3 Indicates a driver was awarded points for qualifying in the top three.[4]
- Bold indicates a driver started from pole.
- Italics indicate that a driver set fastest lap.
Milestones[]
- Seventh victory for Nico Müller.
- Maiden points finish for Harrison Newey.
Standings[]
A third straight victory for Nico Müller after the first three races of the season left the Swiss ace in command of the Championship, having claimed 80 points with his three wins. Robin Frijns, meanwhile, had moved up to second, but was already 37 points behind his teammate after just three races. René Rast and Jamie Green were next up ahead of Sheldon van der Linde, who was the only BMW pilot in the top seven as Mike Rockenfeller and Loïc Duval trailed him by just four points.
In the Teams' Championship there was little surprise that Audi Team Abt led the charge, as their two drivers had combined to score 123 points after just three races. Audi Team Rosberg were next up in second, 54 points behind the sister squad, while Audi Team Phoenix completed the top three on 44 points. Likewise, it was an all Audi affair in the Manufacturers' Championship, with the Ingolstadt marque holding 212 points to BMW's 76 points.
