The 2020 Lausitzring Race 1, formally known as the 2020 DTM Lausitzring Race 1, was the fifth race of the 2020 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany on 22 August 2020.[1] The race would see René Rast secure his second win a row in wet but drying conditions, as Nico Müller fought back from delaying his stops for slicks on a drying circuit.[2]
Qualifying, which was staged in fully wet conditions, would see Müller sweep to pole position, after Timo Glock caused a mid-session red flag by spinning into the gravel.[3] The Swiss racer would edge out René Rast for the top spot on the grid, while Marco Wittmann led the BMW faction by securing fifth on the grid ahead of the sister car of Lucas Auer.[3]
The circuit was still wet as the field assembled on the grid for the start, with Müller easing into the lead unopposed.[2] Behind, Müller's teammate Robin Frijns would slither ahead of Rast to secure second, with the #33 Audi just managing to hold onto third from Mike Rockenfeller.[2]
The early laps saw the circuit quickly begin to dry, with Müller and Frijns running nose-to-tail until the #51 Audi began to ease clear.[2] Behind there was little change to the order as the field steadily got to grips with the evolving conditions, with everyone waiting until someone else gambled on making the switch to slicks.[2]
Fabio Scherer was the first to blink on lap ten, who duly recovered from a slow out-lap on cold tyres to set a new fastest lap on his second lap, a full two seconds quicker than Müller out front.[2] Frijns and Rast would opt to stop on lap thirteen in response to the Swiss racer's improved pace, while Müller remained out for an additional lap.[2]
Müller's delay enabled Frijns to jump into the lead, while Philipp Eng would jump into second ahead of Müller having stopped a lap earlier than Frijns.[2] Müller, meanwhile, would lose out to Wittmann and Rast over the course of his out-lap, although once his tyres were up to temperature the #51 Audi was quickly setting the outright pace.[2]
However, Rast too would also get up to speed, resulting in two Audis quickly elbowing their way past the two BMWs to sit behind Frijns as the race entered its closing stages.[2] The two would soon engage the #4 Audi for the lead, with Rast sweeping past on lap 28, while Müller followed on lap 30, having lost two seconds to the defending Champion in the process.[2]
That factor settled the race, with Rast holding on to secure a comfortable victory ahead of Müller, while Frijns held onto third.[2] Glock, meanwhile, would make an impressive run from fourteenth to fourth courtesy of a well timed stop and well managed pace, while Wittmann kept out of reach of Rockenfeller to secure fifth.[2] Loïc Duval was next up ahead of a disappointed Eng after his pace collapsed, while Sheldon van der Linde and Jamie Green rounded out the scorers.[2]
Background[]
A week after the previous round at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany the field of 2020 would once again gather in the paddock of the former mining facility.[1] This time, however, the sixteen strong field would use the full in-field circuit at the EuroSpeedway, which was unchanged from the DTM's previous run at the circuit in 2019.[1] Likewise, there were no changes to the entry list after the previous weekend, as discussions continued about the DTM's short to medium term future.[4]
Rast Ramp-up[]
Despite failing to win for the first time in 2020, Nico Müller would still hold a handsome lead in the Championship, the Swiss ace ending the the second race weekend with 100 points to his credit. That meant that René Rast, the only other race winner in 2020, was 39 points behind in second, while Robin Frijns was 42 points off in third. Jamie Green and Mike Rockenfeller them completed the top five, both with around a third of Müller's points tally, while Marco Wittmann was the first BMW pilot in sixth.
Audi Team Abt would retain a healthy margin in the Teams' Championship, the German squad having again claimed the most points of any team as they moved onto 158 for the season. Audi Team Rosberg were next up in second, 63 points behind, while Audi Team Phoenix completed the top three on 58. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, Audi still remained in full control, the Ingolstadt marque having claimed 283 points in the first four races.

Rast himself was still in second on 88, before a fourteen point gap to Robin Frijns in third. There was then a significant gap back to fourth placed Mike Rockenfeller, while Marco Wittmann had moved up to fifth as he remained as the lead BMW pilot.
In the Teams' Championship there had been no major changes at the front of the field, with Audi Team Abt still leading the charge with 195 points. Audi Team Rosberg were next up in second on 123 points, while behind Audi Team Phoenix had remained ahead of BMW Team RMG courtesy of the countback rule. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, Audi had once again scored more than 70 points in a single race, leaving them on 355 points to BMW's 135.
