2020 Lausitzring Race 1 | 2020 Assen Race 1 |
The 2020 Lausitzring Race 2, formally known as the 2020 DTM Lausitzring Race 2, was the sixth race of the 2020 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany, on 23 August 2020.[1] The race would see Lucas Auer finally break the Audi win streak by passing Timo Glock on the final lap, marking his first win since 2017.[2]
Qualifying had seen 2020's emerging quali-specialist Robin Frijns storm to his fourth pole position, defeating teammate Nico Müller by 0.018s.[3] René Rast was best of the rest in third, continuing their personal top three lock-out of the top three grid slots, with Sheldon van der Linde the best BMW qualifier in fourth.[3]
The start of the race saw Frijns jump into an early lead, while Rast managed to edge ahead of Müller to claim second from the Championship leader.[2] Behind, Jamie Green slotted into fourth as van der Linde stalled to make it and Audi 1-2-3-4 at the head of the field, with the rest of the field getting away largely in grid order.[2]
The early laps saw Rast use DRS to pass Frijns into the first corner on lap four, although Frijns remained glued to his tail afterward.[2] The Dutchman duly moved back ahead with an identical move on lap seven with Müller watching on in third ahead of Green.[2]
Green duly became the first driver to stop for fresh tyres, with a number of others opting to stop in his wake as the top three drove on.[2] Indeed, Frijns, Rast and Müller would remain out in-spite of the fact that those that had stopped were as much as two seconds a lap quicker, with Rast eventually blinking on lap seventeen.[2]
That decision by Rast allowed him to jump ahead of Frijns after the Dutchman stopped two laps later, although both he, Frijns and Müller, would find themselves mired in the midfield among the early stoppers.[2] Green, meanwhile, would assume the lead of the race and drive very defensively, although he would eventually fall to both Timo Glock and Lucas Auer as the race wore on.[2]
Into the closing stages and Glock and Auer would squabble for the lead, aided by the fact that Green was keeping the now faster trio of Frijns, Rast and Müller behind in-spite of them using sister cars.[2] However, the Audi quartet were only a second behind the leading BMWs as they came to complete the penultimate tour, prompting Glock to make an intriguing decision.[2]
Indeed, in a bid to ensure that a BMW won the race, Glock would not defend from Auer as the #22 BMW lunged past the #16 BMW on the brakes into the first corner, with the Austrian ace duly going on to secure victory by a second.[2] Glock, meanwhile, would ultimately secure second as Green and Frijns fought over third, with the Dutchman emerging ahead in a sprint to the chequered flag.[2] Behind there was a near dead-heat for fifth as Müller beat Rast to the line by 0.009s, with Jonathan Aberdein, Loïc Duval, Marco Wittmann and a recovering Sheldon van der Linde rounding out the scorers.[2]
Background[]
There were no changes to either the Lausitzring nor the entry list ahead of the second race around the full in-field circuit at the EuroSpeedway, with the conditions now sunny with a very low threat of rain for the second day of action.[1]
Rast Rush[]
In the Drivers' Championship Nico Müller would retain the initiative despite losing out to René Rast for the second race in succession, the Swiss ace still 33 points clear at the head of the field. Rast himself was still in second on 88, before a fourteen point gap to Robin Frijns in third. There was then a significant gap back to fourth placed Mike Rockenfeller, while Marco Wittmann had moved up to fifth as he remained as the lead BMW pilot.
In the Teams' Championship there had been no major changes at the front of the field, with Audi Team Abt still leading the charge with 195 points. Audi Team Rosberg were next up in second on 123 points, while behind Audi Team Phoenix had remained ahead of BMW Team RMG courtesy of the countback rule. In the Manufacturers' Championship, meanwhile, Audi had once again scored more than 70 points in a single race, leaving them on 355 points to BMW's 135.
