The 2021 Assen Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Assen 2021 Race 2, was the twelfth race of the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the TT Circuit Assen in Assen, Drenthe, Netherlands, on 19 September 2021.[1] The race would see Lucas Auer resist pressure from Liam Lawson late on to secure his first victory of the campaign, as the New Zealander took control of the Championship hunt.[2]
Auer had been the man to beat in qualifying too, the Austrian ace defeating Race 1 winner Marco Wittmann by 0.073s.[3] Lawson, meanwhile, would share the second row with teammate Alexander Albon, while Mirko Bortolotti claimed sixth in the guest T3 Motorsport Lamborghini.[3]
The start of the Sunday race proved cleaner than the Saturday run, with no major collisions as the field fired across the start line.[2] Indeed, the battle into the first corner for the lead was also rather tame, with Auer having enough in hand to deny Wittmann even half a look into the right hander.[2]
Auer's lap would expand out to 1.8 seconds before the end of the opening tour, with Wittmann's ballasted BMW unable to match the lighter Mercedes-AMG.[2] Instead, Wittmann found himself under sustained pressure from Albon and Lawson, with the two Ferraris keeping up the offensive throughout the early stages.[2]
The pit-phase began on lap five, with Auer and Lawson darting in to leave Wittmann and Albon at the head of the field.[2] A lap later and the BMW and #23 Ferrari were also in, although both would fall to Lawson as they rejoined on cold tyres.[2]
Auer was left with a three second lead after the pitstop exchange, with Lawson setting about eating into the Austrian racer's lead.[2] Behind, Daniel Juncadella appeared in a surprise third after the pitstop phase, taking advantage of the Wittmann/Albon fight to jump both, while Kelvin van der Linde managed to drag himself into their fight and overhaul Albon.[2]
Into the closing stages and Lawson would finally get onto Auer's tail, although the #30 Ferrari was unable to force a move meaning Auer would ultimately take victory by six tenths of a second.[2] Juncadella, meanwhile, would drop out of the race late on to hand third to Wittmann, who had both van der Linde and Albon glued to his tail as they crossed the line.[2] Maximilian Götz was next up ahead of Bortolotti's Lamborghini and Nico Müller, Vincent Abril and Esteban Muth were a distant ninth and tenth, while Mike Rockenfeller claimed the final point in eleventh.[2]
Background[]
There were no changes made to the TT Circuit Assen for the second race of the weekend, with the entry list similarly unmodified for the twelfth race of the campaign.[1]
Assen Assessment[]
As with the entry list there were no changes made to the Balance of Performance calculation for the second race of the weekend, barring the allocation of success ballast.[4]

Leader Lawson[]
Liam Lawson's seventh podium finish of the campaign had seen the New Zealander finally move back to the top of the Championship hunt, overhauling Kelvin van der Linde. Indeed, van der Linde had slipped eight behind the New Zealander having arrived in Assen with the lead of the Championship hunt, while Marco Wittmann had moved level with the South African ace in third. Elsewhere, Lawson would also have complete control of the Junior Championship, 101 points clear of Sheldon van der Linde in second.
AF Corse had extended their lead in the Teams' Championship after the opening race in Assen, the Italian squad having moved 41 clear of Team ABT Sportsline in second. Mercedes Team Winward occupied third, 73 points off the lead, with Mercedes Team HRT in fourth. In the Manufacturers' Championship Mercedes-AMG continued to head the charge on 388 points, with Audi 126 points off the lead in second.

Milestones[]
- Liam Lawson declared as the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship for Juniors Champion.
- Lucas Auer secured his sixth victory.
Standings[]
After two straight second places in Assen Liam Lawson ended the weekend in the Netherlands with a ten point lead in the Championship, as a new man emerged in second. Indeed, Marco Wittmann's strongest weekend of the season had seen the German racer move five ahead of former leader Kelvin van der Linde, while Maximilian Götz was twenty off the lead in fourth. In the Junior Championship, meanwhile, Lawson had already sealed the title ahead of the trip to Hockenheim, having moved 120 points clear of Sheldon van der Linde with 112 left to fight for.
In the Teams' Championship AF Corse had retained their command of the title hunt with two rounds to go, the Italian squad having moved onto 279 points for the campaign. That left them 58 ahead of Team ABT Sportsline in second, while Mercedes Team Winward were 74 off the lead in third. Mercedes-AMG, meanwhile, were in control of the Manufacturers' Championship on 426 points, 147 clear of Ferrari in second.
