2020 | 2022 |
The 2021 DTM Season, formally known as the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, was the twenty-second season of the DMSB DTM Championship and thirty-fifth of the top tier of German touring car racing.[1] The season would see a massive change to the DTM ruleset, after the demise of the Class One regulations due to the costs involved in building and running those cars and a lack of manufacturer interest.[2]
The new season brought a new wave of both teams and manufacturers, with ABT Sportsline and Team Rosberg the only teams to remain in the Championship from 2020.[3] In terms of manufacturers the revised DTM would retain Audi and BMW from 2020, see Mercedes-AMG return with seven entries, and gain full season entries from Lamborghini and Ferrari for the first time in the DTM's history.[4]
On the driver front reigning Champion René Rast would not defend his title, instead taking a seat in Audi's soon-to-be-defunct Formula E squad.[5] Runner-up Nico Müller would remain in the DTM, however, and would open the season as favourite, as various GT3 specialist drivers such as Kelvin van der Linde, as well as ex-Formula One racer Alexander Albon, joined the Championship.[6]
The season would open in mid-June with a trip to Monza, Italy, which saw Vincent Abril claim pole position, before Red Bull protégé swept to his and Ferrari's maiden victory on their mutual debut.[7] Sheldon van der Linde then claimed his fist win of the season at the second race in Monza, before Philip Ellis secured Mercedes' first win of the season at the opening race in Lausitz.[8]
The season would soon become a story of the battle between Ferrari's Lawson and Audi's van der Linde, with those two exchanging four victories between them over the next three rounds.[9] Marco Wittmann and Albon would also claim victories during that period, while Maximilian Götz would keep pace with the two leaders with a run of finishes in the top four.[9]
The penultimate round of the season in Hockenheim would see Lawson make a big step towards the title, opening out a fourteen point lead over van der Linde.[10] The finale would be staged at the Norisring after its late re-inclusion to the calendar, with the two races on 9 - 10 October settling the Championship in controversial fashion.[11]
Indeed, the first race would see van der Linde try an ambitious lunge at Lawson into the first corner, resulting in both losing ground and running wide, although Lawson came out on top.[12] The second race saw another desperate lunge into the hairpin from the South African racer, which duly saw the #3 Audi slam into the #30 Ferrari and take Lawson out of contention.[11]
van der Linde would still have to win the race, and with the #3 Audi carrying its own damage, and set to be slapped with a penalty, the South African racer's hopes of the title were effectively over.[11] That left Götz as the only man who could take the title from Lawson if he secured victory, although the German racer was running in third behind stablemates Lucas Auer and Philip Ellis as the race headed towards its conclusion.[11] The two sister Mercedes-AMGs duly moved aside to let Götz through to claim victory and the Championship, despite the fact that the #4 Mercedes-AMG was some twelve seconds behind Auer with ten laps to go.[13]
Götz hence became the first DTM Champion of the GT3 era, with a distraught Lawson ending the season in second, three points behind, but having claimed the first ever Junior Championship title.[13] AF Corse, meanwhile, would secure their first Teams' Championship title in their maiden season, while Mercedes were declared as the Manufacturers' Champions.[11]
Background[]
Calendar[]
The provisional calendar for the 2021 season was unveiled ahead of the delayed 2020 season finale, and would include a long six month break for the series due to adoption of the new GT3 ruleset.[14] The main changes from the delayed 2020 campaign would see the race at Spa-Francorchamps dropped, while a return to the Red Bull Ring was planned.[14] Furthermore, the season was to open at the new Igora Drive circuit in Russia, which had initially been set to debut during the 2020 season, while the annual trip to the Norisring was also restored.[14]
Initial Ideas[]
The 2021 season was to start at Igora Drive near St. Petersburg, Russia, on 28 - 30 May 2021, before a trip to another debuting venue in the form of the Autodromo Nazionale Monza on either 11 - 13 or 18 - 20 June.[14] The DTM Nuremberg Speedweekend was to follow on 2 - 4 July, ahead of the familiar sights of the Lausitzring for the new DEKRA Lausitzring Grand Prix on 23 - 25 July.[14] The season would then reach its halfway point of the provisional nine race schedule at the Circuit Zolder in Belgium on 6 - 8 August.[14]
The ever present Nürburgring would return for its annual DTM race on 20 - 22 August, with the exact circuit layout to be used by the revitalised DTM yet to be revealed.[14] The Red Bull Ring then made its first return to the DTM calendar since 2018 on 3 - 5 September, before the series headed to the Netherlands and the TT Circuit Assen on 17 - 19 September.[14] The season was then to conclude on 1 - 3 October at the Hockenheimring, using the full Grand Prix circuit.[14]
Cancelled Causes[]
The first casualty of the expected calendar changes would be the planned opener at Igora Drive, which was cancelled without explanation on 15 January 2021, moving the season opener to Monza, which was officially given the 18 - 20 June slot.[15] This was followed on 29 April 2021 by the postponement of the trip to the Norisring in Nuremberg, which was delayed until the autumn, after the organisers Motorsport Club Nürnberg (MCN) had not got permission from the local council to stage the race on its planned date.[16]
On 28 July it was announced that the Norisring round would be reinstated to the calendar following negotiations with the Motorsport Club Nürnberg (MCN) and the City of Nuremberg, serving as the season finale on 8 - 10 October.[17]

Testing Schedule[]
Ahead of the new DTM era the Series would organise two pre-season tests to allow all teams and drivers to get familiar with the new GT3 based ruleset.[18] The first test was to be held on 7 - 8 April at the Series' traditional home at the Hockenheimring, with a second and final test scheduled for 4 - 6 May.[18] The tests would also allow the Series to test its new BoP formula, as well as allow support series the DTM Trophy and BMW M2 Cup complete their testing for the new season.[18]

Season Report[]
Regulations[]
There were major changes to the DTM ruleset ahead of the 2021 season, after costs, the Covid-19 Pandemic and lack of manufacturer interest saw the Class One formula, used in 2019 and 2020 withdrawn.[14] There would also be changes to the series' official tyre and fuel suppliers, as well as adjustments to the sporting rulebook.[14]
Technical[]
The major change to the ruleset would be the move away from the 2.0 litre engined Class One formula, which had been created and used by the DTM and the Super GT series before 2019.[14] Instead, the DTM would move to its own version of the widely used Group GT3 formula created by the SRO Group in 2005 to replace the increasingly expensive GT1 and GT2 formula used by the FIA at the time.[14] However, various changes would be made by the DTM on a surface level in a bid to distinguish itself from rival series the ADAC GT Masters, which already used the GT3 ruleset, with the DTM dubbing its new formula as "GT Plus" for 2021.[14]
GT Plus[]
The original planned GT Plus formula would have seen various changes made at a software level to the GT3 ruleset, with ABS and traction control set to be removed while the DTM would request that a new launch control system would be used.[14] However, after discussions with several manufacturers who already had existing GT3 cars and were concerned about the costs of converting that equipment, the DTM opted to drop those plans.[52] However, the DTM would be able to enforce its own "Balance of Performance" formula to keep the various GT3 cars balanced, which would also include a provision to increase the power out-put of GT3 cars, while also implementing a success ballast system that would penalise the top three drivers in each race.[14]
Outlined in the table below is a break down of how success ballast is to be applied based on finishing positions:
2021 Ballast Allocation | ||
---|---|---|
1st | 2nd | 3rd |
25 kg | 18 kg | 15 kg |
Tyres and Fuel[]
Elsewhere, DTM tyre supplier Hankook would cancel their contract at the end of 2020, forcing the DTM to look for its first new universal tyre supplier since 2011.[53] In its place, ITR e.V. would sign a deal with Michelin to supply the DTM with tyres, with the French tyre manufacturer supplying one of its various GT3 based tyre compounds for the entire DTM season.[53] Regardless, the DTM would retain its compulsory mid-race pitstop to change tyres, despite the Michelin Pilot Sport GT S9M tyre expected to last for a standard DTM race distance.[53]
Fuel-wise long standing DTM fuel supplier and partner Aral AG would leave the series amid parent company BP disassociating itself with combustion engine motorsports, leaving the DTM searching for a universal fuel supplier for the 2021 season.[54] Instead, it was Shell who would supply all teams in the DTM's two pre-season tests, although the Anglo-Dutch company were not keen to sign a partnership deal with the Series.[54]
Sporting[]
There would be one major change to the sporting rulebook ahead of the 2021 season, with standing starts abolished due to the change to the GT3 ruleset, which lacked a launch control system.[52]
