The 2021 Lausitzring Race 2, formally known as the DEKRA Lausitzring Grand Prix 2021 Race 2, was the fourth race of the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Lausitzring in Klettwitz, Brandenburg, Germany, on 25 July 2021.[2][1] The race, which was the second to be held using the banked first corner of the EuroSpeedway, would see Maximilian Götz secure victory for Mercedes-AMG, his first in the series.[3]
Qualifying for the second battle of Lausitz had seen Race 1 winner Philip Ellis defy his additional ballast to secure pole position, the Anglo-Swiss racer having thrashed Liam Lawson by four tenths of a second.[4] Götz was next up in third ahead of Kelvin van der Linde, while Sophia Flörsch failed to set a time after suffering from a mechanical issue.[4]
A dramatic start to the race would see Ellis and Lawson make even starts off the grid, although the New Zealander would opt to brave a run around the outside of the #57 Mercedes-AMG through turn one to challenge for the lead.[3] His bravery was paid off as the #30 Ferrari duly out-braked Ellis' Mercedes for turn two and emerged with the lead, as behind the rest of the field made it off the grid without issue.[3]
With that Lawson was away, storming into an early lead as Ellis fought with the combined effects of success ballast and a full tank of fuel.[3] Instead, Ellis would find himself overhauled by a charging Kelvin van der Linde, with the South African racer first elbowing his way past Götz, before scything past Ellis for second.[3]
van der Linde duly tried to take the initiative in the pit-phase, diving in first on lap six in a bid to undercut Lawson for the lead.[3] Lawson completed two more tours before coming in for his stop, although a slow reaction from being told he could leave his pitbox saw the #30 Ferrari lose a lot of time.[3]
Indeed, that slight hesitation would not only hand van der Linde to the lead, but also allowed a resurgent Götz to move right onto the #30 Ferrari's tail, before sweeping past as Lawson fought to warm up his tyres.[3] Those two duly established a small lead over the New Zealander, who hoped that his later stop would give him an advantage in the closing stages, while van der Linde himself established a comfortable margin over Götz.[3]
Yet, with twelve minutes to go the race was turned on its head, with van der Linde's engine suddenly cutting out as he came across the start/finish line.[3] Quick thinking from the GT3 veteran saw van der Linde get his engine fired again before he came to a complete stop, although that intermission allowed both Götz and Lawson to charge ahead.[3]
The rest of the race would see van der Linde try in vain to try and reclaim the lead, although he was stopped at the first hurdle by Lawson who put up a beautiful defence of second.[3] That allowed Götz to cruise across the line to claim his maiden DTM victory ahead of Lawson, while van der Linde claimed third with fastest lap.[3] Ellis was next up ahead of Sheldon van der Linde and Marco Wittmann, Daniel Juncadella defeated Mike Rockenfeller in a late duel, while Lucas Auer and Nico Müller rounded out the scorers.[3]
Background[]
There were no changes made to the Lausitzring after the 2021 Lausitzring Race 1, with the field still using the full banked first corner after its successful race debut.[2] There would, likewise, be no changes to the entry list, although Esmee Hawkey found herself in T3 Motorsport's spare, ADAC GT Masters prepared, Lamborghini after her heavy crash in the first race.[5]
The Perfect Balance?[]
Ahead of the second race at the Lausitzring there would be no modifications made to the Balance of Performance calculations, meaning both starting weight and engine/turbo restrictors, outside of success ballast, would remain unchanged.[6]
Outlined below are the BoP calculations and success ballast allocations for the 2021 Lausitzring Race 2:

Ellis Excellence[]
Kelvin van der Linde had retained the lead in the Drivers' Championship, although his advantage had been reduced to nine points after the opening bout at Lausitz. Liam Lawson had done the damage, the New Zealander having continued his early season form, while behind race winner Philip Ellis had shot up to third. In the Junior Championship Lawson continued to head the charge ahead of Sheldon van der Linde, holding more than twice the South African racer's points.
In the Teams' Championship Team ABT Sportsline had moved to the top of the Championship, having moved onto 76 points for the campaign. That meant that they were level on points with AF Corse at the head of the field, although the German squad were deemed to be ahead on countback. In the Manufacturers' Championship Audi and Mercedes-AMG shared the lead on 100 points, with the former marque ahead on countback.

Milestones[]
- Maiden victory for Maximilian Götz.
- Haupt Racing Team secured their first victory as an entrant.
- Mercedes-AMG secured their win as a manufacturer.
Standings[]
Kelvin van der Linde ended the second race weekend of the season still in the lead of the Drivers' Championship, although the South African racer's lead had been cut to just four points. Indeed, another podium finish for emerging star Liam Lawson had ensured that the New Zealander kept pace with the early leader, and moved him seventeen clear of Philip Ellis in third. Furthermore, Lawson had a handsome 37 point lead in the Junior Championship, with Esteban Muth even further away in third.
In the Teams' Championship Team ABT Sportsline had lost their tenuous lead atop the table, although they had only fallen one behind the new leaders. Indeed, AF Corse had moved back to the head of the field as both teams fell just shy of the 100 point mark for the season, with third placed Mercedes Team Winward 21 points off the lead. In the Manufacturers' Championship Mercedes-AMG had returned to the top of the table, 27 clear of Audi in second.
