The 2021 Spielberg Race 2, otherwise known as the DTM Spielberg 2021 Race 2, was the tenth race of the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, staged at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Styria, Austria on 5 September 2021.[1] The race would see Liam Lawson secure his second victory of the weekend, defeating Marco Wittmann in a race long duel despite carrying maximum ballast.[2]
Qualifying had seen the duo also scrap for pole position, with Wittmann edging out the New Zealander by just 0.026s after half an hour of running.[3] Third place went to Sheldon van der Linde ahead of Maximilian Götz, while Championship leader Kelvin van der Linde was the best placed Audi driver in seventh.[3]
The start saw the duo continue their battle, with Wittmann easing into the lead with Lawson half-challenging into the first corner.[2] They duly slotted into first and second ahead of Sheldon van der Linde, with the rest of the field getting away without issue.[2]
The opening laps saw the field quickly settle into a steady rhythm, with the lead duo escaping into a small lead over van der Linde, who was instead engaged by Götz for third.[2] van der Linde subsequently dropped out of the hunt when he suffered a puncture, just before the pit window opened on lap five.[2]
Wittmann was the first of the lead duo to stop, diving in as soon as the pits opened with the majority of the field following him in, fearing a Safety Car.[2] The en-masse pit wave would cost Wittmann time as he had to wait for a car to pass hit pit garage after his stop, allowing Lawson, who stopped a lap later, to jump ahead.[2]
Lawson and Wittmann resumed battle soon after, with Wittmann drawing within striking distance of the New Zealander on lap eighteen, having sat a second behind Lawson immediately after their stops.[2] However, after one aborted lunge the German racer would drop back as Lawson set a quick series of hot laps to open the lead back out to a second, before the duo began catching those running long first stints.[2]
The slower traffic would work in Lawson's favour, with Nico Müller in particular getting in Wittmann's way which saw Lawson's lead balloon out to two seconds.[2] Wittmann duly closed back in as the race came towards its conclusion, and would try to setup a late move for the lead as they started the final lap.[2]
Ultimately no real chance would come for Wittmann on the final tour, with the #11 BMW unable to out-drag the #30 Ferrari out of the final corner, leaving Lawson as the victor by two tenths of a second.[2] Behind, Götz was a distant third to complete the podium, while Philip Ellis and teammate Lucas Auer ran together throughout to finish fourth and fifth.[2] Kelvin van der Linde, Arjun Maini, Vincent Abril, Maximilian Buhk and Timo Glock would complete the scorers.[2]
Background[]
There were no changes made to the Red Bull Ring for the second race of the weekend, with the entry list likewise unchanged.[1]
Nürburg Normality[]
There were no changes made to the Balance of Performance calculations either for the second race of the weekend, with everything except success ballast remaining unmodified on all twenty entries.[4]
Outlined below are the BoP calculations and success ballast allocations for the 2021 Spielberg Race 2:

Lawson's Lunge[]
Kelvin van der Linde continued to lead the Championship charge as the season entered its second half, although the South African racers lead had been reduced to 23 points. Maximilian Götz had done most of the damage as he closed up to the lead in second, while Liam Lawson had shot back into third after his second win. Lawson also continued to lead the Junior Championship with nine races completed, 66 points clear of Sheldon van der Linde in second.
In the Teams' Championship a fourth win for AF Corse had lifted the Italian squad into the lead of the title hunt, having smashed through the 200 point barrier. They had, however, only managed to open out a two point lead over former leaders Team ABT Sportsline, while Mercedes Team Winward remained in third, 61 off the lead. In the Manufacturers' Championship Mercedes-AMG continued to head the charge on 321 points, while Audi and Ferrari had held station in second and third.

Milestones[]
- Third career victory for Liam Lawson.
- Fourth win for AF Corse as an entrant.
- Ferrari secured their fourth win as a manufacturer.
Standings[]
Kelvin van der Linde had remained in the lead after the tenth race of the campaign, although his lead had been largely torn apart by his closest challenger. Indeed, a near-perfect weekend for Liam Lawson had seen the New Zealander move to within twelve of the South African racer, while Maximilian Götz was within sixteen of the leader. Elsewhere, Lawson was in complete control of the Junior Championship, 92 points clear of Sheldon van der Linde in second.
AF Corse would retain the lead they had gained in the Race 1, having moved onto 229 points after ten races. Team ABT Sportsline were in second, 21 points off the lead, while Mercedes Team Winward had retained their top three status with 163 points. In the Manufacturers' Championship Mercedes-AMG retained the lead, 103 points clear of old rivals Audi in second.
