Season Guide
2021 2023

The 2022 DTM Season, formally known as the 2022 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, is set to be the twenty-third season of the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship, and the thirty-sixth edition of the premier level of German touring car racing.[1] The season was originally planned to be staged across eighteen races at nine race meetings, beginning in Portimão and ending in Hockenheim.[1]

Background[]

Calendar[]

An initial nine round calendar was unveiled for the 2022 DTM Championship on 3 September 2021, with the season opening outside of Germany for a third straight season.[1] The series would then head to its first race inside the German boarder, with four races in Germany, and five across Western Europe.[1]

Provisional Plot[]

The season would open at a brand new venue for the DTM, with the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão, Portugal opening the season on 29 April - 1 May, the first time that the series had raced in Portugal.[1] The Lausitzring, which retained its banked first corner, would then host the second round on 20 - 22 May, before a duo of 'To Be Announced' rounds on 3 - 5 June and 17 - 19 June.[1] The first half of the season would then come to an end at the familiar Norisring, which would host its annual DTM round on 1 - 3 July.[1]

After a near-two month break the DTM would resume with a familiar blast around the Sprint Circuit at the Nürburgring, initially planned for 26 - 28 August.[1] The series would then make its return to the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium on 9 - 11 September, before a pair of races at the Red Bull Ring, Austria, on 23 - 25 September.[1] The season was then set to conclude on 7 - 9 October at the Series' home at the Hockenheimring, with almost every round bar the season opener supported by the DTM Trophy and DTM Classic Cup.[1]

Imola Invitation[]

A few weeks after the provisional calendar was unveiled it was announced that the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari would join the calendar, taking the second of two 'TBA' slots on 17 - 19 June.[2] It would mark the Series' first trip to the circuit near Imola, Italy, and would effectively replaced the trip to the Autodromo Nazionale Monza which had opened the 2021 season.[2] The 3 - 5 June calendar slot remained open, with the DTM still planning to hold a round elsewhere in Europe rather than within Germany.[2]

On 23 December 2021 it was announced that the 3 - 5 June round would be cancelled, after ITR e.V. cancelled its contract with the promoters of the round that had been held at Assen since 2019.[3] The removal of that round left the calendar with eight rounds and sixteen races, four in Germany and four outside of Germany, with no plans to add to the tally.[3]

Testing Schedule[]

The pre-season test schedule for the 2022 DTM Championship was unveiled on 18 November by ITR e.V., and would feature two multi-day tests for both the DTM and its support categories, the DTM Trophy and BMW M2 Cup.[4] The first would be held on 4 - 7 April at the DTM's traditional home of the Hockenheimring, while the second was to be staged at the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal a week before the opening round.[4] In-season tests were unlikely to be scheduled, with a collective test post-season also unlikely to be arranged.[4]
