Adrien Tambay (born 25 February 1991 in Paris, Île-de-France, France) is a French racing driver, who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship between 2012 and 2016.[1] The son of former Formula One driver Patrick Tambay, Tambay would not have a renowned DTM career, only claiming three podium finishes in 65 starts.[1]
Tambay made his debut in 2012, joining ABT Sportsline as a junior driver for Audi.[2] Partnering Rahel Frey for the campaign, Tambay would have a difficult debut, although a podium finish in Valencia pushed him up to tenth in the Championship.[3]
Retained for 2013, Tambay would have an overall stronger but less spectacular season, slipping to fourteenth in the Championship.[4] 2014 saw Tambay open the season with a podium, although after several other points finishes the Frenchman would only manage to claim fourteenth in the Championship.[5]
2015 saw Tambay remain at Team Abt, although a miserable season saw the Frenchman only claim three points, slumping to 24th.[6] Audi hence moved Tambay to Team Rosberg for 2016, although a lone podium finish for the Frenchman still left him down in eighteenth in the Championship.[1]
Tambay left the Audi DTM programme at the end of the DTM season, instead taking part-time seats in several endurance series.[7]
Background[]
After a relatively brief stint in karting from 2001 to 2006, Tambay made his debut in the 2007 Formula BMW Germany Championship, ending the year fourth in the standings.[8] Third place the following season saw him step up to the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2009, although, unlike many of his DTM rivals, it was to only be a single season.[8] After failing to register a point during a disjointed season, Tambay moved on to the Auto GP Series.[8]
Two years in Auto GP saw Tambay take two wins and a best championship result of fourth.[7] He combined this with a limited 2010 campaign in GP3, finishing 20th, and Formula Renault 3.5 in 2011.[8] At the end of 2011, however, Tambay was approached by Audi to join their DTM charge in 2012.[7]
DTM History[]
Tambay's first DTM campaign in 2012 saw him stand on the podium at the penultimate round in Valencia, ending the season in 10th overall.[7] Yet, it took until the second half of 2013 before Tambay became a consistent points finisher, scoring at four of the final five races, on his way to 14th in the standings.[7] In 2014, Tambay started strongly with a third place at the season opener in Hockenheim, followed by points at the following three rounds.[7] Only one more points finish, however, saw Tambay fall to 14th in the final standings.[7]
Abt Sportsline retained Tambay for 2015, partnering him with Edoardo Mortara in their second pair of Audi RS5s.[6] After finishing fifteenth in the opening race of the DTM Festival, Tambay retired from the second race after damage sustained throughout.[8]
