Alexandros Margaritis (born 20 September 1984 in Bonn, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany; Αλέξανδρος Μαργαρίτης in Greek), is a Greek-German racing driver, who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship between 2005 and 2007.[1] A winner of the ADAC GT Masters series after his time in DTM, Margaritis would spend most of his time in the DTM competing in older machinery, although did become a semi-regular point scorer in two of his three campaigns.[2]
Margaritis secured a move to the DTM ahead of the 2005 season, when Mücke Motorsport signed him to partner Stefan Mücke for their first campaign.[3] Using a year-old car, Margaritis would fail to score a point, claiming a best finish of ninth, en-route to nineteenth in the Championship.[4]
For 2006 Margaritis moved to Persson Motorsport for the season, joining Jean Alesi and Mathias Lauda in their three car entry.[5] Partnered by Alesi in terms of driver pairings, Margaritis would manage to secure his first points finish at the season opener in Hockenheim, with four further scores seeing him finish eleventh in the Championship.[6]
Retained by Persson Motorsport for 2007, Margaritis would partner returning former Champion Gary Paffett for the season, although would again compete in a year old car.[1] A relatively impressive season saw Margaritis match teammate Paffett throughout the season, finishing tenth behind the Brit, although frustration about constantly using a year old car saw Margaritis leave the Series at the end of the season.[2]
After leaving the DTM Margaritis initially struggled to secure either funding or a seat, taking part in only a handful of races before joining the FIA GT1 World Championship in 2010.[2] In 2011 the Greek racer moved to ADAC GT Masters and won the series at his first attempt, before retiring from racing the following season after failing to defend his crown.[2]
Background[]
Born in Germany to Greek parents, Margaritis began his career in karting in the mid-1990s, competing in Germany until the end of 1999 season.[2] The following season saw Margaritis secure a seat in the Formula BMW ADAC series, his first year in a race car, with the Greek-German racer finishing nineteenth with eight points.[2] A second season saw Maragaritis claim two podiums and eighth in the Championship, before a move into Formula Renault 2.0 Germany in 2002.[2]
Greek Graces: 2002 - 2004[]
Margaritis rookie season in FR 2.0 Germany saw him finish twelfth in the Championship, combined with a run to third in the Winter Series of Italian Formula Renault and two outing in the Eurocup.[2] That earned Margaritis the attention of teams in the new Formula 3 Euro Series, with the Greek-German racer joining MB Racing for the season alongside Daniel la Rosa.[2] Margaritis would be firmly in the midfield during the season, securing a single podium to finish thirteenth in the Championship, as well as fourth in the Rookie Cup.[2]
A second season in the Euro Series saw Margaritis endure a near identical season, although without a podium finish the Greek racer's points haul dropped from 23 to 18.[2]
DTM History[]
With his single-seater career having stalled at F3 level, Margaritis moved into the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship ahead of the 2005 season, joining Mücke Motorsport for the campaign.[2]
Rookie Ranking: 2005[]
Persson Push: 2006[]
For 2006 Margaritis would secure a move to another Mercedes customer team in the form of Persson Motorsport, who had obtained three, 2005-spec, AMG-Mercedes C-Klasses for the campaign.[5]
Old Frustrations: 2007[]
Retained by Persson Motorsport for 2007, Margaritis would get a new teammate in the form of the returning Gary Paffett, although would again compete in a year-old car.[1]
Post-DTM Career[]
After leaving the DTM at the end of 2007, Margaritis sought a new career path in GT racing, although would only secure one role as a third driver at the 24 Hours of Spa in 2008.[2] Sitting out 2009, Margaritis obtained a seat in the FIA GT1 World Championship in 2010, finishing seventh.[2] In 2011 Margaritis switched to the ADAC GT Masters, and duly won the title at the first attempt with Dino Lunardi.[2]
A switch in teams in the GT Masters followed for Margaritis in 2012, although the Greek racer was unable to defend his title.[2] Then, after a handful of appearances in the VLN during the 2013 season, Margaritis would call time on his racing career.[2]
