António Maria de Mello Breyner Félix da Costa (born 31 August 1991 in Lisbon, Lisbon District, Portugal), better known simply as the António Félix da Costa, is a Portuguese racing driver, who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship between 2014 and 2016.[1] A former factory BMW driver throughout his time in the DTM, da Costa would claim one race victory during his three-year stint in the series, claiming a best Championship finish of eleventh.[1]
da Costa began his DTM career with Team MTEK, as BMW placed him in the Series after finishing third in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series.[2] The Portuguese racer would go on to finish 21st in the Championship, after claiming two points finishes during the campaign.[3]
Moved to Team Schnitzer for 2015, da Costa would have a quiet start for the season, before claiming his first podium, and then race victory, at Zandvoort.[4] The Portuguese racer would go on to finish the campaign in eleventh in the Championship, having only claimed one more podium finish.[5]
Retained for a third DTM season in 2016, da Costa would have a more difficult season, with the Portuguese racer having to balance his DTM and FIA Formula E Championship commitments across the season.[1] As a result da Costa would only claim one podium finish, and hence slipped to seventeenth in the Championship.[6]
da Costa left the BMW DTM programme at the end of the 2016 season, although he would remain as a BMW factory driver, racing in both the FIA World Endurance Championship and Formula E for the Bavarian marque.[7]
Background[]
Da Costa's career began in go-karts in the year 2000, becoming renowned in the sport for taking second in the World Series Karting Championship by 2006.[8] In 2008, da Costa was promoted to single seat racing, competing in Formula Renault, winning the series a year later.[8] He was rewarded with a test drive for Force India in Formula One, putting the car third on the time sheets in the young driver test of 2010.[8]
2012 saw da Costa take the Macau GP, a renowned Formula Three race around the streets of Macau.[8] He was spotted by Red Bull Racing , who signed da Costa to their young driver development programme, and named him as a test driver for the 2013 (and later 2014) Formula One season.[8] After winning the GP3 championship in 2013, da Costa entered the DTM Championship in 2014, while also competing in Formula-e.[8]
DTM History[]
BMW first announced that da Costa would be driving for them in 2014 in December 2013, heading, with Red Bull sponsorship, to the BMW Team MTEK pair of cars.[2] After retiring at the opening race, da Costa clinched his first points at the Oschersleben meeting a few weeks later. Unfortunately for da Costa, he would only score once more during his début season, finishing ninth at the Season Finale at Hockenheim. He finished the season 21st overall, with six points to his name.
Da Costa was retained by BMW for the 2015 season among seven drivers from 2014, although he was moved to the Schnitzer Motorsport effort.[4] He achieved a thirteenth place finish in the first race of the DTM Festival, after contact with Miguel Molina on the opening lap dropped him to the back.[9]
