Arjun Maini (born 10 December 1997 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India) is an Indian racing driver, who competes in the 2021 DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship with Mercedes-AMG Team GetSpeed.[1] The first Indian born driver to compete in the DTM, Maini boasted a CV that contained entries in the FIA Formula 2 Championship and European Le Mans Series prior to making his DTM debut.[1]
Background[]
Maini's career began in karting in 2007, with the youngster setting new records in his native India for largely for his success at a young age.[2] 2014 would see Maini make his debut in a racing car, fighting with teammate George Russell for the crown in the BRDC Formula 4 championship, ultimately missing out by three points.[2] For 2015 Maini would move to the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand, while also securing a seat in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship.[2]
European Dreams: 2016 - 2020[]
Maini impressed in the Toyota Racing Series, ending that campaign fourth, although he would struggle in F3, only taking a handful of points finishes.[2] Regardless, Maini secured a second season in F3 for 2016, only to quit mid-season to join the GP3 Series with Jenzer Motorsport.[2] A strong maiden campaign, despite missing two races, saw Maini get a second season in GP3 for 2017, with the Indian racer claiming his first win in GP3 en-route to ninth at the end of the season.[2]
That performance earned Maini a place in the Haas Development Programme, alongside Santino Ferrucci, as well as a seat in the w:c:f2:FIA Formula 2 Championship for the 2018 season.[3] A turbulent 2018 season would follow for Maini, with the Indian youth claiming sixteenth in the Championship, although that was overshadowed by a post-race spat with teammate Ferrucci after the Silverstone meeting that cost Ferrucci his F2 seat.[2] Overlooked for a full time F2 seat in 2019, Maini would be recalled to series for a six race spell midway through the season, having already signed up to race in the European Le Mans Series.[2]
The ELMS would remain Maini's main programme in the heavily disrupted 2020 season, with travel restrictions preventing him from completing a full season, with the Indian racer also competing in the Asian Le Mans Series over the winters of 2019/20 and 2020/21.[2]
DTM History[]
Maini would make history as the first Indian driver to compete in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship when Team GetSpeed signed him to drive their Mercedes-AMG GT3-Evo for the 2021 season.[1] After a strong showing in pre-season testing, Maini would initially lack the pace of his fellow Mercedes drivers at the season opening race in Monza, finishing fourteenth behind a delayed Lucas Auer.[4] The second race would not see any improvement from Maini, with the Indian drivers' race ending prematurely with a mechanical issue while fighting outside of the points.[5]
