Bernd Mayländer (born 29 May 1971 in Waiblingen, Baden-Württemberg, West Germany) is a German racing driver who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters Championship between 2001 and 2004.[1] Better known as the long-standing pilot of the Safety Car in Formula One, Mayländer would race exclusively for AMG-Mercedes equipped teams in the DTM, achieving a best finish of eleventh in 2001.[1]
Having completed in the 1995 edition of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft, Mayländer made his debut in the reformed DTM in 2001, joining Manthey Racing.[1] Partnering Patrick Huisman for the season, Mayländer would miss part of the campaign due to injury, although he would claim one victory en-route to eleventh.[2]
Retained by Manthey alongside Huisman for 2002, Mayländer would miss the opening round due to his F1 commitments, but would complete the rest of the season.[3] However, the German racer would fail to score any points throughout the season, slipping to nineteenth in the Championship.[4]
For 2003 Mayländer would move to Persson Motorsport, partnering Thomas Jäger for the campaign after Manthey left the series.[5] However, the change of teams did not pay off for the German racer, and hence resulted in him finishing down in nineteenth in the Championship with zero points.[6]
Another move for Mayländer would come for the 2004 campaign, with the German racer partnering Jarek Janiš at Team Rosberg.[7] Yet, again issued with year-old machinery and with commitments in F1, Mayländer would fail to score for the third consecutive season, and would ultimately end his racing career at the end of the season.[8]
Background[]
Mayländer began his career in karting in both West and East Germany, before entering his first race car series in 1992, joining the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland.[9] After finishing the season at the back of the field, Mayländer would return for the 1993 campaign, and duly improved to third.[9] A third season would see Mayländer again step-up the field, claiming the 1994 Championship with three wins, while also taking fourth in the Supercup.[9]
GTs and Tourenwagens: 1995 - 1999[]
For 1995 Mayländer would gain a seat in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft with Mercedes' customers Persson Motorsport, and would finish the season in twentieth in the Championship.[9] Mayländer stayed with the Series into 1996 and its transformation to the International Touring Car Championship, although he would slip further down to twenty-fourth in the Championship.[9] With the Championship dissolved at the end of the season, Mayländer would move into the FIA GT1 Championship for 1997 but remain as a factory Mercedes, claiming one win en-route to thirteenth in the Championship.[9]
1998 saw Mayländer remain in GT1, although he would fail to match his heights from the previous season, slipping to fifteenth.[9] For 1999 the German racer would move back in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland as well as the Supercup, and duly claimed sixth in the latter.[9] He would also make his one and only appearance in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and duly claimed second in the GT class with Porsche.[9]
The 2000 season saw Mayländer focus on the Supercup for the entire season, and duly finished as runner-up to Patrick Huisman, while also claiming victory in the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring.[9] He would also secure a permanent role as the Safety Car driver in Formula One, a seat which he would occupy through to 2020.[10]
