Bruno Spengler (born 23 August 1983 Schiltigheim, Grand Est, France) is a French-born Canadian racing driver and former DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters entrant, who won the 2012 DTM Championship.[1] Known within the paddock as "The Secret Canadian", Spengler competed between the 2005 and 2019 seasons, racing for Mercedes and BMW during his DTM career.[2]

Signed by Mercedes for the 2005 season, Spengler was placed in the Persson Motorsport team, and would have to wait until the end of the season to claim his first points finish.[3] However, after a move to the factory HWA Team alongside Mika Häkkinen in 2006, Spengler would emerge as a title contender, claiming four late-season wins en-route to second in the Championship.[4]

Retained by HWA for 2007, Spengler would again fight for the title, although only one win ensured that he would finish as runner-up for the second season.[5] 2008 would be a more difficult season for the Canadian racer, as he slipped to fifth in the Championship having failed to in a race.[6]

It was a similarly, relatively, disappointing campaign for Spengler in 2009, with the Canadian racer again failing to win a race throughout the season.[7] However, he would bounce back in 2010 to contend for the the title, although two non-scores at the end of the campaign saw him slip to third.[8]

Spengler would entertain another title challenge in 2011, although the Canadian racer again ended the campaign in third for the second consecutive year.[9] For 2012 Spengler would accept an offer to join the new factory BMW outfit for the season, being signed as a factory driver and placed at Team Schnitzer.[1]

That move worked wonders for the Canadian ace, as he claimed the marque's first victory, before charging to the title with four wins in total.[10] Spengler would also fight, briefly, for the 2013 campaign, although he would slip to third after a strong start.[11]

Retained by Schnitzer and BMW for 2014, Sepngler would have a more troubled season, slipping to eleventh in the Championship.[12] As a result BMW would move Spengler to Team MTEK for 2015, with the Canadian racer bouncing back to fifth in the Championship.[13]

2016 was another more difficult season for the Canadian racer, with Spengler only claiming a single podium finish in fifteenth.[14] He was subsequently moved to Team RBM for 2017 after MTEK withdrew from the series, with the Canadian claiming his first win since 2014 at the Norisring en-route to thirteenth.[15]

Spengler had another quiet campaign in 2018, with only one podium finish coming despite improving to twelfth in the Championship.[16] The Canadian racer would subsequently improve to ninth in the Championship in 2019 after moving to Team RMG, and would also claim his fifth win at the Norisring.[2]

Spengler was removed from the BMW DTM programme at the end of the 2019 season, with the Bavarian manufacturer instead placing him in their other motorsport programmes.[17]

Background[]

After seven years in karting from 1993 to 2000, Spengler stepped into his first motor racing series in the Formula Renault Eurocup in 2001.[18] After taking ninth in that series, Spengler competed in two different Formula Renault series, taking the North American version while finishing runner-up in the German edition.[18] Two seasons in the Formula 3 Euro Series were uneventful, before Spengler was promoted, by Mercedes-Benz, to the DTM for 2005.[18]

DTM History[]

Spengler was adopted by Persson Motorsport and handed a year old Mercedes-AMG C-Class from the 2004 season, taking until his ninth race to score a point.[19] It was in 2006, armed with a HWA prepared C-Class when Spengler truly showed his pace, taking his first career victory at the Norisring.[19] Three further victories at the Nürburgring, Le Mans and 2006 Hockenheim Finale Race took him to second in the championship.[19]

Mercedes Second Best[]

Spengler was in title contention for the 2007 season, but only one win (again at the 2007 Norisring Race), meant he fell well short of Mattias Ekström's total.[19] 2008 was a winless year for the Canadian, although his best result of the season once again came at the 2008 Norisring Race.[19] Spengler improved during the 2009 championship, standing on the podium three times throughout the season, on his way to fourth in the Championship.[19]

Spengler returned to the top step for the first time in two seasons in 2010, claiming the honours at the Lausitzring.[19] Another victory followed at the 2010 Nürburgring Race, as Spengler took third in the title race, once again hoping to become a title contender for the 2011 campaign.[19] Two more victories in 2011, including a third at the Norisring, saw Spengler finish in the top three of the championship once more, in what proved to be his final season with Mercedes.[19]

BMW Brilliance[]

In 2012, Spengler switched to BMW to lead their new DTM campaign that season alongside Martin Tomczyk.[19] Four victories, and a record total of points, took Spengler to his first DTM crown, clinching the honours with victory at the season finale in Hockenheim, beating Gary Paffett by four points.[19] Spengler took the first title for BMW since the series reformed in 2000, and at their first attempt in the new DTM championship.[19]

Only one win (at the Red Bull Ring) and a string of poor results in the second half of the season saw Spengler relinquish his crown at the end of the season, finishing third overall.[19] A similarly barren year followed in 2014, as Spengler only twice stood on the podium in the ten race season.[19] He was moved out of BMW Team Schnitzer at the end of the season, moving to BMW Team MTEK for 2015.[18]

Full DTM Record[]

Spengler's full results from his 194 starts in the DTM are outlined in a series of tables below.
