Christian Vietoris (born 1 April 1989 in Gerolstein, Rhineland-Palatinate, West Germany) is a German racing driver, who competed in the DMSB Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters between 2011 and 2016.[1] A founding member of the reformed Mercedes-Benz Junior Team, Vietoris would race for the Stuttgart marque throughout his six year stay in the series, and would twice finish in fourth in the Championship.[2]
Vietoris made his DTM debut in 2011, with Mercedes placing him in the customer Persson Motorsport squad for the campaign.[3] A quiet rookie season saw Vietoris, partnering Susie Stoddart, only claim one points finish during the season, leaving him in fourteenth in the Championship.[4]
Regardless, Mercedes would move Vietoris into one of their factory seats for the 2012 season, with the German racer partnering Gary Paffett.[5] A stronger season saw become a semi-regular point scorer, although he would only manage to secure twelfth in the Championship with 25 points.[6]
Retained for 2013, Vietoris would once again improve, claiming four podium finishes as well as his first pole and fastest lap en-route to fourth in the Championship.[7] 2014 would see Vietoris claim his maiden DTM victory at Oschersleben, although a significant number of pointless races ensured that he would again finish fourth in the Championship.[2]
A more difficult season for Vietoris would follow in 2015, with the German racer only claiming one podium finish as he slipped to sixteenth in the Championship.[8] As a result, Vietoris was moved across to Mücke Motorsport for the 2016 campaign, although another difficult campaign saw him only claim fourteenth in the Championship.[1]
Vietoris was subsequently dropped from the Mercedes DTM programme at the end of 2016, who instead placed him in the customer GT racing roster of drivers instead.[9]
Background[]
Vietoris started in karting, before starting in a full racing career in the Formula BMW ADAC Championship 2005, taking sixteenth overall with 17 points.[10] His 2006 campaign in the BMW ADAC Championship ended in glory, with Vietoris earning a drive in German Formula 3 Championship as his prize for the title.[10] A single, 2007 campaign in German F3 ended with Vietoris in sixth, with the Formula 3 Euro Series arriving to him in 2008.[10]
After taking a single win in 2008, Vietoris finished runner-up in 2009.[10] After four wins, Vietoris missed out to future F1 racer Jules Bianchi, moving on to the GP2 Series in 2010, taking a single win (having spent the winter in the Asia version of the said series).[11] In 2011, Vietoris received backing from Mercedes-Benz, completing a final season in GP2, while also competing in the DTM.[9]
DTM History[]
Signed for Persson Motorsport, Vietoris used an older Mercedes-AMG C-Class in the 2011 season, surprising the field with a points finish at the third from last round.[3] With a new Mercedes-AMG C63 DTM under him, Vietoris improved in 2012, missing out on a podium at the season opener in the 2012 Hockenheim Opening Race.[9] 25 points were his final total for the year, good enough for twelfth overall.[9]
By far his best season, 2013 saw Vietoris stand on the podium four times on his way to fourth in the championship.[9] Yet, it was a memorable race in Oschersleben during the 2014 season for which Vietoris earned respect, taking his first DTM victory.[9] He went on to finish fourth in the championship with 69 points, as part of the HWA Team squad for the third year in a row.[9]
